Seriously, though, this game looks really incredible. If this trailer is to be believed, it seems like they've really overhauled the plot in the series. As a longtime fan whose favorite fighter franchise is Soul Calibur, I couldn't be any more excited for this entry than I already am.

Unless Talim is in it as well. Then I could be.

Though Namco admittedly improved the gameplay in successive iterations, they never seemed to have recaptured the classic, legendary atmosphere and memorable experience that was the original Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast. I loved the impressive sense of the era, the wonderful tales that they spun (like fighting for money in the Coliseum, training with an old weapons master, meeting thieves on the Silk Road, performing for a Chinese emperor, infiltrating dark cult temples, or getting caught up saving a random passerby on the streets of Venice), the classic and memorable music, and the overall immersive and optimistic mood of the game, not to mention the hundreds of unlockable art. And the masterfully light touches, like Xianghua's unexpected special ending, gave it such a unique and progressive charm.

Every iteration since has dropped the ball in those respects, especially with the pandering focus on the "dark hero" Siegfried... it's like they think people are suckers for contemporary Japanese anti-hero redemption fantasies, especially where the anti-hero's an angsty pretty boy J-rocker with a big sword. My interest's pretty well gone by this point, this trailer only furthers my impression.
