On their Youtube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/FUNimation) they're listing Shikabane Hime Episode 1 to be added next week. Maybe this means they're going to be streaming it as it airs in Japan?

Well, if they plan on streaming as it airs in Japan, they're already two weeks late. Maybe it is a pre-license, but I always thought doing something like that was dumb in case a show turns out to be terrible. And so far, I'm far less than enthralled with the show, probably because we all expect shows to be the next Gurren Lagann or Gunbuster/Diebuster from Gainax now.

Actually, yeah, all of their non-mech, non-original shows do suck.

Two weeks isn't terribly late even in fansub terms, so I think we can cut R1 companies like Funimation some slack for having a window of 2 weeks rather than 2 years.

And you're saying shows like His & Her Circumstances, Mahoromatic, and Abenobashi all sucked? Okay, they had their issues, but still...

It's not long at all if you consider how long it took Viz to put up downloads of Death Note when it was originally airing (I don't remember exactly how long it took, but it was months and the series had already aired twelve episodes). I'd love it if they could do this for other shows (like GONZO's done with Druaga, Blassreiter, Linebarrels of Iron, and Strike Witches).

I hope though that they also put up a higher quality version on iTunes (or other sites) for download. Streaming's fine for me, but if they just do streaming some people might complain about the quality and use it as an excuse to continue pirating. I've been interested in seeing this since I usually enjoy GAINAX anime and I tend to like series with some kind of horror element Very Happy

If they announced that it'll be on BOST, I'd shit bricks.

I guess the DVD's will come out on a similar rate as the Japanese DVD's, so I don't think the pirates/leechfags argument is as good...Youtube broadcast is the replacement for TV, if you want high quality resolution you buy the DVD's.

Yeah, the only reason I bring it up is that I've heard seen some people on MAL complain that the BostTV downloads for GONZO's shows are not the same quality as the high-def versions they can pirate. It's not a good argument, but it's one some of them still make.

no problems with early licenses, but i'm getting sick of seeing Funisoft picking up everything left and right, trying to be the one stop anime mega corp...............

I'd rather see some of the companies get some nice huge licenses.

ADV could use a few, and i'd love to see Right Stuf get their hands on some other bigger name titles............

while i agree, what can really be done? Right Stuff is more interested in fringe ventures, and ADV's pretty much buried themselves. the only actual alternative is Bandai.

personally i still have nightmares about the old dragon ball (z) dubs

also the whole use of youtube (and other services) came out of fansubbers using them, me i'd rather have a high grade DVD or Fansub over watching it via youtube squintovision, now with my collection of 712 anime dvds i'm no stranger to buying them, i think the use of youtube is a set back as the darkest agents among the fansub community throw away quality for speed, and force companies to release lower grade versions, that while free at times lack the same artistic quality as the DVD release. I'd rather see quickly release R1 DVDs (maybe one for each month of airing a month after release) rather than some bandwidth draining video that i need to wear my glasses to even read and still put my nose to the screen to read right.

How about some super robot series like Reideen and Gaiking(the modern versions, of course)? The genre should be fashionable again since Gurren Lagann has been getting released here.

unfortunately, the word 'buy' is the detriment here. People pirate because they don't want to pay for anything and then they slap some stupid nonsense justification over that fact so that they don't look like cheap-asses.

I'm interested to see how this plays out, but I do share the same feelings as others here on the poor quality of youtube videos. I mean, youtube is the place I go to watch videos of idiots in order to feel better about myself, not to watch shows. When it comes to shows I want a picture that's at least decent.
But, who knows, maybe they can do it. If they can get the picture on even the same level of quality as standard-def tv, then I'll concede my worries Wink .

Don't count on seeing it come over here any time soon. The license dispute surrounding the Macross franchise has been going for ages now, so this might take forever...

Huh? Youtube is much lower quality than TV, and DVDs are on par with TV, not greater, so it doesn't make sense. Of course there are numerous other things that break comparisons on them in both directions.. but in any case, until youtube can at least do SD quality, I think fansubs are legitimately much better to watch. They aren't DVD quality or even close unless they are DVD rips, which they won't be for many months if ever.

(Although I have to say the initial group puts such a low bitrate on this show that it's barely above youtube quality).

Anyway, as to my "argument" I don't think piracy is a big deal regardless, as long as you buy what you can. I buy as much as any do here as a percentage of my income, and I'm a "pirate" too. So what? I'd rather have more paying "pirates" than less overall viewers.
