I'm a huge sci-fi action fan, and new to anime, I have the evangelion perfect collection and ghost in the shell movie (awaiting the stand alone complex dvd's) and i love both series, is the blue gender dvd set something worth buying?

Hm...I think Blue Gender's worth a shot. It's more "gritty horror" than the two you listed, but it's got some similar elements that make it easy to recommend. Yeah, I'd say go for it.

I didn't care much for it, but to each his own. I never got to like the characters much, so that for me equals not a fun show. Same reason I never finished Noir....

I enjoyed Blue Gender. It has very depressing mood and story isn't too bad neither. I think its worth the money.

Blue Gender has kind of mediocre animation but the story is really very good. I didn't really like the last 1-2 episodes where the tone of the series sort of goes from one extreme to the other...
I would recommend it though as the story is fantastic.

I really enjoyed about 2/3 of Blue Gender. Unfortunately, it got pretty boring near the end. Also, the art and animation seemed to get worse and worse as the series progressed as well.
Are you asking this because the bug's mouths all look like Georgia O'Keefe paintings?

There are some sexually offensive scenes throughout the series. Nothing too graphic though.

I've never heard of "sexually offensive scenes" scenes before . Blue Gender doesen't really have a lot of nudity/adult scenes. meatycheesyboy is right about the bug's mouths though. I liked how adult swim compared them to "angry woman's crotch" .
Anyway, I liked this show and I look forward to seeing the movie. I hope it'll have a less open-ended ending. By the way, am I the only one who was reminded of Neon Genesis Evangelion while watching this show?

There are just a couple of those scenes sprinkled throughout the series. Nothing very graphic, but certainly suggestive.
You may already have noticed them. I've only watched half the series because (again) I got distracted with a new series I bought. I don't remember episode numbers too so here's what I remember:
1. Between the team members when they first got to earth to retrieve Yuji (was that his name?). There was some very obvious groping around.
2. Briefly between Marlene (was that her name? my poor memory) and one of the surviving team members (the one who looks like a character from Arc the Lad, with the headband), and Yuji getting all pissed off because they didn't seem too bothered with the situation they were in. Team captain badly injured by then.
3. Marlene bathing in that pond and a bug (the burrowing one) comes and spoils the fun.
4. Yuji and Marlene exploring the space station and seeing other occupants having their fun, openly.

19 is definately old enough to be watching Blue Gender if it seems interesting to you. I also don't think that age should'nt be a determing factor in what someone watches or doesn't watch, because a mature kid could be able to watch something an im-mature adult wouldn't be able to handle.
