What, pray tell, is this? Is there room in the market for another variation on the 'young girls who fly' theme?

They didn't give them at the time they were supposed to. Instead they aired at what was supposed to be the second airing's time. They aired out of order(Mai, Scrapped, Planetes, then Ayashi), and they didn't give Rocket Girls at all!! I was quite looking forward to it too. They were all in subs, except for Ghost Slayers Ayashi, which was dubbed..and it doesn't seem like they'll repeat them all tomorrow with dubs like they usually do...but I'll check anyway. They screwed up the schedule today, so tomorrow's might also be screwed up. Since I've seen Mai HiME subbed, I wanted to watch it dubbed. Plus, I'm usually a fan of Bandai dubs.

Also, they gave this live action Japanese comedy called the Great Horror Family. I had never heard about, but it was quite entertaining. A nice little surprise which I'll keep watching.
