Hey, while i was reading my april issue of shonen jump(american version) I saw a little collum on the free comic day(may 3, for those who didn't know) and the 32-page special and was wondering if anybody knows anymore on the day. The shonen jump book says that special gives a preveiw on slam dunk, bleach and naruto. Well question, does anybody first off know about any other free manga books or special things and second if they have a little special for shojo beat manga like they do with SJ. I have thought about getting an issue of shojo beat but never did, so just wanted to know and when the day comes- HAPPY FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!

Ye gads! Has the whole world gone daft??
What about Drawn & Quarterly's manga sampler, Gekiga, eh? It's gonna feature an extract from Seiichi Hayashi's Red Colored Elegy and the ever-awesome Yoshihiro Tatsumi's Goodbye and Other Stories. To hell with Shonen Jump, it's got plenty of readers. Do yourselves a favour, and indulge in alternative classics! |

Ooo, thanks for mentioning that. I wouldn't have any reason to even think about Free Comic Day otherwise. That might be worth seeing what comic stores there are in the area (that are actually participating and the like.) |

free comic book day? hm, since shonen jump is participating, it means manga too right? how would it work? just go to a store that is participating and they would give you a manga or something? do you think that stores like barnes and nobles and kinokuniya would be participating as well? O.o; if anyone knows of these stores.. :X

No. When you go to a comic book store (since it's run by diamond, I doubt Kinokuniya or B&N will be participating) You get your choice of a SAMPLER that it's specifically made by a participating company. You DO NOT get a free volume of manga (unless the store's crazy, or is trying to get rid of unsellable backstock. Helllllo Bomber Girl!) |

Hey, don't diss Bomber Girl! It had plenty of great...boobs....and stuff...
And as mentioned, Free Comic book Day is a promotion orginized by Diamond, the biggest (and virutally only) comic suppler on the market that most funny book companies participate in. Usually you can pick from individual issues (usually of the more popular series), sampler booklets and sometimes an entirely original work. In addition to the picks provided by the publishers some stores offer free issues of their old stock that they can't sell. Also keep in mind that most stores won't stock every single book listed on that site, especially the Silver ones. I'm a bit surprised that Tokyopop or CMX don't have samplers coming out. At least they don't according to the FCBD site; they'll probably ship the ones they hand out at cons. Anyways, from that list I'd say the best picks are: the Gegika book, the Ignaz sampler, the new Hellboy story, All-Star Superman #1 (if your not already reading it) and the free volumes of Neotopia. |

For those who have never been to Free Comic Book Day* before, the list of free comics available this year is here....
http://www.freecomicbookday.com/the_comics.asp In addition to Shonen Jump and Gekiga, manga fans may also want to check out Rod Espinosa's manga-style book Neotopia, which they're apparently giving away the first three volumes of. That's...impressive! You can locate participating stores in your area here: http://www.freecomicbookday.com/fcbd_locator.asp * ...which is the best holiday EVER, and I'm not just saying that because it's on my birthday this year. ![]() |

Damn, I got to the only store in Ireland supporting FCBD today, but they didn't have the Gekiga sampler.
![]() Ah well, I picked up the Hellboy, X-Men, World War Hulk (WTF) and an Iron Man/Hulk sampler in the package I was given. All crap, save for Hellboy. We were also given a choice of graphic novels to choose for free as well, and I got The Losers, by Jock and Andy Diggle. At 5pm, the store had a raffle, and in the end I won a Merv Pumkin Head bust from the Sandman comics (limited to 1000) that would've cost me 50 euro... Brill day. |

The shop was out of/didn't have Shonen Jump and Gegika. Oh well I could live without another chapter of Naruto, was interested in Gegika however. I got the Maximum Ride comic which will be serialized in the new Yen Plus magazine, The Simpsons (with manga style short at the end), Nascar Heroes, Gumby, and Hellboy. Also received the Iron Man Hero Click.

Can't say I'm surprised that no one could find the Gekiga sampler. It has the first sixteen-pages of Red Colored Elegy and part of a Tatsumi story concerning a man who takes a haunting photograph in the days after Hiroshima was bombed. Not much happens in RCE story-wise but it's a nice sample of Hayashi's storytelling, which is a radical departure from Tatsumi's traditional style. It takes a lot of cues from animation and has a really contrast between black and white. The line work and the dream-like pacing reminds of of Screw Style as well. Pretty standard Tatsumi story, though it is strange for him to be using first-person narration. Other than that I got Hellboy, Neotopia and an extra issue of All-Star Superman to give to a friend (because its that awesome) and I finally managed to pick up the first volume of Isaac the Pirate, so it was a good FCBD overall.
Highway Star: I thought World War Hulk was pretty enjoyable at first in a kind of "HULK SMASH" way. I mean I didn't even try to follow any of the 50 different spin-offs or tie-ins but even taken alone it was an improvement over most of Marvel's output. But The Losers was a decent choice and looks like you got lucky with the Merv bust. |

Happy Belated Comic Book Day everyone
![]() I would've loved to get a free comic book, but alas, the nearest place that stocks comics to me is some 350 kilometres away. Woe is me. *shifty eyes* |
