Pretty timely question about talk about "the industry" given the foolishness averaging a post every 4 minutes in the thread about the Arthur Smith letter today.

I haven't played a single game based on an anime license, but I've been thinking about getting the Bleach game for the Wii (I just need a Wii to play it on).

I registered specifically to say that anime fans spend all of their time talking about "the industry" no more often than fans of anything else. I am a hobby game geek, an anime/manga geek, a video game geek, and a fantasy/science fiction geek. I'm sort of a sports geek. I was a comic book geek for a long time and a role playing geek at one point, and have been in message boards for all of those hobbies.

And they all, continuously, talk more about the industry in question then they do about anything else.

EDIT: And also, happy holidays Smile

I think ANN should start a fantasy league.

Pretty sure anime fans talk more about the industry than most other fandoms because we're slightly more pathetic.

Nothing wrong with that though. Our patheticness controls nations!

I played Yu Yu Hakusho: The Dark Tournament and it was one of the worst fighting games I've ever played. The story mode basically forced you to win (or lose...) fights exactly like they happened in the show. No, you can't KO or Ring Out that guy with the huge axe, if his health goes to zero it refills; you have to use a specific move when his health gets under a certain amount. Rolling Eyes The move sets were limited and dull, so playing with other people wasn't much fun either.

I've stopped even reading those. I read posts from select users in some of the previous ones but... ugh, that's a lot of posts with little of worth being said.

I haven't seen an anime movie in the last few years that deserved to win it.

What about Millennium Actress or Innocence?

Don't be too mean, man. Arias is a user on here now...

(again, anyway - Paprika did deserve to win last year but due to the fact that it was a Sony release, it never stood a chance anyway).

Bull. They pushed for Triplets of Belleville, and it got nominated.

It's pretty awful, but I keep looking anyway. It's like watching a train wreck in very slow motion and wishing the damn thing would hurry up and explode.

I guess with Geneon's recent issue and then we're now talking about the industry is declining, it doesn't surprise me that people would be concerned. Even Justin's letter had me thinking for a while.

I'm a little surprised that you think Innocence was seriously award-caliber. Millennium Actress was good, but it wasn't really that special. Kon has made better films before and since.

Seriously, Innocence? That movie was a self-indulgent, pretentious wreck.

I haven't seen Ratatouille but did see Tekkonkinkreet which I thought was damn awesome. Your comparison really made me want to see that finally. I just need some clarification on what you said. Someone who like Tekkonkinkreet more that Ratatouille has bad taste, weird taste or no taste and just liking it because it's anime?

I had that game and ended up selling it because it was just bad. The story was definitely ridiculous, and if it weren't for cutscenes from the show, I don't think it would've been worth the effort.

Ratatouille is, to me, one of the best films of the year, and probably the best film Pixar has ever made, which is saying a lot considering the sheer number of amazing films that studio has produced. Tekkonkinkreet is a sorta-OK adaptation of a pretty good comic. It's not about bad taste, but if you watched both and sincerely think TK is better, I do have to question your judgment. I really can't see how anyone would sincerely consider TK to be a better film on any level.

"Anyone saying there was a better anime film this year is delusional."

What about Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo ?

I loved Paprika as well, but I thought the mentioned movie was just as good, if not better.

EDIT: Also, concerning anime games, does Zone of the Enders count? That one DID blow me away...I still play both of them from time to time.

I play a lot of video games and I noticed that anime video games seem to be kind of crappy more often than not. I love naruto and have played some of the games and they just dont seem very good or as good as the best American games. Is there a reason for that?

Yeah, basically mistake here he is making is equating games based off of licenced properties of anime to japanese games. It is games based off licenced properties that are generally not as good as other games. There are plenty games that fall into both categories from both North America and Japan.

We're taking about Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence I assume? I've gotta second what Zac said. The original was great because of its brilliant presentation and execution (among other things). Innocence was so pretentious, disjointed, just not well done at all.
