I thought L'arc-en-Ciel got their name from L'arc de Triomphe in France.
I pronounce it: Larc-en-see-el, but I don't know if that's how you really pronounce it. |

I'm pretty sure its French for rainbow...but I could be wrong since I haven't spoken French in 7 years...

I've always heard it pronounced "Laruk-en-shiel," which correcting for Japanese accent would come to "Larc-en-See-el."
Very good music, BTW.

i think it depends which pronounciation you're going for. i know some people call 'em laruku. i say lark en shiel. i think vigilante is right. the literal translation is arc in the sky. so rainbow's probably right.

Well, I say La-arc-en-cell, although I guess it should be seal. To each his own, eh?
Anyway, I'm sure I've heard them but I can't remember from where. |

They did the ending song "Fourth Avenue Café" for Rurouni Kenshin, as well as "Niji" for the Rurouni Kenshin Motion Picture. They also did "Driver's High" for Great Teacher Onizuka and "Spirit Dreams Inside" for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. That aside though, they're just popular among anime/Japanese music fans in general. |

Can't remember a thing from Spirits Within, as for the others I've can't recall them. Thanks though.

I had to use a French dictionary to translate it. I, too, agree that it means "Rainbow"
I always pronounced it wrong: "La-Arc-en-shiel"; Hey, I am taking Spanish and Japanese, not French
Lets see...I LOVE their music! They sang "Fourth Avenue Cafe", yes, as well as "Blurry Eyes" from DNA2 and "Driver's High" from GTO. |

L'arc-en-ciel quite literaly means the rainbow. L' = the (le élidé) and arc-en-ciel is rainbow. As for pronunciation, I just pronounce it in French, even though that's not how it's done in Japan.

In French, the L in ciel is pronounced, it's almost like saying "si elle" in terms of pronounciation, but the meaning is different.

As my sister said, "L'arc-en-ciel" means Rainbow. Literally, it is "The Arc in [the] Sky" which is french for Rainbow.
As for pronounciation, this is a bit hard if you don't know how to read pronounciation keys. "L'arc" is pronounced a bit like lark, but the a is pronounced "ahh" not "aw", like in arrow.. lahrrk "en" is hard for anglophones because the sound for this kind of N in french does not exist in English. Try saying "On" without touching your tongue to the roof of your mouth at the end but making the N sound with your throat. "ciel" is pronounced "sea"-"el" ... easy -t |

I've always just pronounced it the French way. But when GTO was aired in Japan, they had several L'Arc~en~Ciel commercials, with people in the ad trying to pronounce the name. And what it finally came down to was "'Lark' un" see-el-u" (with Lark pronounced as with an "aw" sound and a rolled r). So, French or Japanese, it's up to you.
