Last year, I asked that question. However, since it's starting to be common now for dating sim to be made into anime, could someone list all the series of anime based off of dating sim. PS, is the anime version of Kanon fairly ecchi? I like fanservice series.

I've only watched the first 2 episodes, but so far its extremely non-ecchi, which honestly is my preferance.
 If nudity or scenes of a certain nature fit the scene or actually bring something to the episode or series I have no problem with that, but stuff that is just complete fanservice for its own sake seems pointless to me. And yes, I'm a guy.

If you're looking for an ecchi series, you're barking up the wrong tree with Kanon (the 2006 series at least, I haven't seen the first one). Maybe there's one or two scenes that I'm forgetting, but I can't recall any fan service in that series.

I've seen a couple anime based off h-games, and mostly they were rather less ecchi than many other series I'd seen. Even School Days, in which the characters actually have sex, was decidedly less fanservice-y than, say, Vandread or Burst Angel.

Well, that's why the alternative nomenclature for these sorts of games: 'bishoujo games', would seem to encompass most of those other categories, and therefore would be a better term to use if not referring to specific genres such as 'visual novel' or 'dating sim'. I'm of the impression that what gets the animated adaptations are actually visual novels, for the simple reason that the stories there are already neatly packaged, so the anime writers will practically only have to select a path that they want to animate... But please correct me if I'm in error. Ah, that confusing, confusing world... 
Back on point, I feel as if the fanservice level of bishoujo game adaptations are far lower than those of adaptations of seinen manga. Witness something like Tsukihime. Now I haven't finished the series, but I've played some of the Arcueid and Ciel path in Tsukihime. And while the games really do have eroge content, there isn't much fanservice in terms of the typical 'pantsu shot' or 'naked apron' stuff. Even Tokimemo ~Only Love~, an adaptation of Tokimemo Online (to some extent), has little fanservice. So if it's a fanservice show you're looking for, then it's best to look elsewhere (or if you wish, dive into hentai territory). Just my thoughts. |

It is kind of ironic though isn't it, that their nature completely flips when they become animes. Its like the creators feel that since it contains romance, that it would be more for a cross-gender audience. So they take out things that would drive girls away too much, and leave the fanservice to stuff that is almost completely directed towards males like harem animes and stuff like Ikkitousen.

I know what you mean. I think Canvas 2 is based on a dating sim game, but it didn't have a lot of fanservice compared to Maburaho (and Vandread and Burst Angel  ).

Well, maybe the production staff of the anime adaptations have enough confidence in the loyalty of their fanbase to risk alienating them by cutting out the fanservice. Although, it CAN be argued that the appeal of visual novels really do lie in their story or emotional content, as opposed to fanservice or eroge content. |

Very good point. Take the anime adaptation of Kanon 2006 for example. So many people running around: "It came from an eroge! Nudity! Sex! Incest! Lolis!" But I'm confident that if you rolled every single scene that even hinted at fanservice in all 24 episodes of Kanon they would not add up to what you would find in one or two episodes of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. And I can't wait for all the misinformation that will be flying around when Clannad gets closer to airing.  Maybe I should just create a standard copy-pasta response to those who will be posting all the terrible things they have heard about the ero-scenes in the original game.
BTW - for those not familiar with Clannad, there are not and never were any ero-scenes in the original game. There is a sequel called "Tomoyo After: It's a Wonderful Life" which does have ero-scenes, but the original game had none. |

Taking Ultenth's quote to the extreme would be Diamond Daydreams (org: "Kita eh - Diamond Dust Drops") which took the stories of the women in the game and made them the focus of the show. Furthermore they moved the male and female leads from the game into the background such that they'd been reduced to almost cameo level roles in the anime. If I recall there wasn't one iota of fanservice in the resulting show. It's like the thing had gone from dating sim game to chick flick.

I've seen at least 5 that would fall into the catagory, Rumbling Hearts, Shuffle, Soul Link, Lunar Legend Tsukihime, and Fate/Stay Night. The two type/moon series, Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night, contain very little fanservice whereas Shuffle and Soul Link thrive on it. Rumbling Hearts doesn't really have much fanservice and most of it serves the plot somehow.

Tsukihime, Fate, and Rumbling Hearts may have little to no fanservice but they have outright hentai/ecchi scenes in them, which to some people might be "worse" or "better".

With Tsukihime it's very brief and you don't see much of anything, I don't recall any in F/SN just spoiler[some kissing and gropping between Saber and Rin], and yes there are definitely sex scenes/nudity in Rumbling Hearts, these I would say are borderline fanservice though since they help the story along but I wouldn't argue if someone thinks they were, since they might rate in somebody's book as softcore porn. Nothing I'd label as hentai (IE actual prolonged graphic sex) in either three of them though. F/SN was pretty tame but I'd say Tsukihime and Rumbling Hearts are more akin to an R rating than something porographic. |

I didn't mean to imply that what is contained within Fate, Tsuki, and Rumbling Hearts is enough to quality them as a hentai anime (although Rumbling Hearts is pretty bad I think...I dunno cause I never watched it but even what was on the trailer was super bad, which makes me think the whole show is a super pornofest...but it's probably not).
I just meant to say that these shows do contain ecchi-ish scenes in place of fanservice. To some people, a softcore ecchi-scene is 50x worse (or 50x more 'mature', if you prefer) than staring up some girls skirt. (I am one of these people. But this doesn't mean I shun hentai anime. I am just speaking of what I consider to be more mature and what I consider to be more harmless. I consider fanservice to be relatively harmless). |
