That's just the plot of Brutal Legend, basically.

I'm surprised this series got licensed, considering the very frequent and clear references to real world musicians, complete with on panel depictions. I wonder if any of that will have to be changed?

Man, Titan is really going on the offensive with all the licenses its been getting. I only wish they'd put that same zeal into hiring actual translators. Seriously, all of their manga as far as I know have the translation credited to Motoko Tamamuro and Jonathan Clements, but I haven't heard anything about the latter going into translating manga (Do correct me if I'm wrong), and I have no idea if the former is even a real person (Again, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

To be fair, you can literally just look up Clements own listing on the ANN Encyclopedia & see him credited for manga in the past, like Takayuki Sakai's manga adaptation of the Street Fighter II Movie (released by Viz back in the 90s) & Tekken Chinmi (released by Bloomsbury, only in the UK, in the 90s). Yes, Clements is known more for his anime translations, but there have been translators who have worked on both in the past, like the Nibley Sisters.

As for Motoko Tamamuro, they also have their own ANN Encyclopedia listing & have been referenced as far back as 2002, when Stone Bridge Press announced that Clements & Tamamuro were co-writing a guide to J-Dramas.

Titan Manga (or, more specifically, Stonebot Comics, which works with Titan for some releases) was previously called out for really poor translations, namely for Kamen Rider Kuuga's manga, despite only crediting Clements & Tamamuro, with some feelings that Titan/Stonebot was relying on AI translation. Titan did respond with indications that things would be fixed with later releases, but no one's really bothered to check beyond Volume 2 of Kuuga. I recently did notice, though, that it took Titan close to an entire year to actually release Volume 4 of Kuuga (January 2024, while Vol 3 was March 2023), so hopefully that indicates that moves were made to fix the problems that had previously existed.
