Judging by this review and other Mr. Eisenbeis' reviews I came to the conclusion that he knows little about animation and its principles. Even the trailers are full of impressive character acting that require lots of finesse and skill from the artists.

Not a single word uttered about Yamada's direction is kinda crazy too.

Sounds like a unique film.

On the visual side, things range from competent to truly inspired. As is par for the course for Science SARU, the more surreal things get the better the film looks. [...] And even at its worst, the animation quality is still average for an anime film.

The shots of how Totsuko views the world are breathtaking and there is some top-tier directing to compliment it.

If you have any chance to see this move and stumble upon this review, please don't take it to the heart too much. I would recommend seeing the movie and forming your own opinion, as it could be interpreted in a completely different way than the review's author did.
Conflict with an authority is more of a point of conflict, rather than the main theme. Movie focuses more on our perception of different people, illustrated by main heroine's gimmick. How we are drawn to them and how our interactions can modify perception even of ourselves. In turn self-understatement lets other fuller perceive us. Authority figures are shown in a wide range, from accepting to demanding, from non-caring to heavy involved and how those difference stances can affect young people.

For fans of Yamada there is a lot of Yamada-ismus (focuses on hands, scenery shots, bringing up usually mundane sounds...) especially in the beginning. Interestingly it is much more cheerful in tone, compared to her other works. For reoccurring themes/shots I focused mostly on windows (there is a TON of shots of windows) and of course colours.

Spoilery impressions:
spoiler[In my opinion the climax of the movie is the "training camp" scene, where everyone shares their worries and gains a resolve to "change things they have an impact on". After that Rui shares with his mom his love for music, Kimi confesses to dropping the school and Totsuko fulfils her dream of dancing to her favourite song, without caring about skill or talent. Understanding that brought her an acceptance, that finally allowed her to see her own colour. In the end everyone did what they can do (confessing/dancing) and also accepted what they can't change: Kimi didn't go back to school and stood by her decision, Rui went to college to take over family clinic in the future and Totsuko came to terms with her imperfections.]
