So, instead of being one incompetent company, they can be three incompetent companies.

I've at least heard that after spending the last year+ shedding staff and selling off its prior purchases for a fraction of what they spent, Embracer is shifting towards trying to do something other than cut costs. I suppose this fits the bill in that it seems to acknowledge the company was too big do anything efficiently. If nothing else, at some point they have to work on producing something with what they have left, otherwise, it's just prolonging Embracer's existence for no purpose.

If this puts Dark Horse in a better position to produce a Lord of the Rings graphic novel (in three to six volumes?) then all to the good!

I guess that would depend upon the artist! The Hobbit was adapted for Eclipse Comics by the creative team of artist David Wenzel; and writer Charles "Chuck" Dixon with Sean Deming. Wenzel is 73 years old now and might be retired. Not to mention that such a project might be better utilizing a different art style.
