So I want to love magical girl anime so bad - I always love the characters, the costumes, the magic... but find the battles painfully boring.
This list has good recommendations though. A lot of these I heard the names of back in the day but had no idea what they were about. I'm especially interested in Hime-chan's Ribbon, too bad it's not licensed. |

I finally see Cyber Idol Mink mentioned by somebody other than me!! I'd love to see an anime made out of Cyber Idol Mink, but I think what might work better is actually Tachikawa's other work Dream Saga. With its focus on environmentalism, I think a lot of younger and older people would relate to the overall message of the story. Plus, it kind of falls into the isekai genre?

I was this close to mentioning Dream Saga in the article! It's my absolute favorite of Tachikawa's series and I love the way it blends folklore with dreams and fantasy. I went with Cyber Idol Mink in the end because it's more of a magical girl story while Dream Saga is, as you said, much more isekai, but both titles deserve much more love than they get! |

If you're talking about SMAP performing the OP theme, then you're info is outdated. SMAP only performed the OP for the original TV airing, with the home video version featuring a new cover of the same song performed by Seiko Sawada. In other words, Japan already dealt with Johnny & Associates for this anime. Anyway, this was a really fun article to read, with neat & information picks, and now I really would love to see this same format done for other genres, as well. |

If we can get a remake of Tokyo Mew Mew, honestly I don't mind getting a remake of some of these shows -- if only to show them for a modern audience. I'll always know Tonde Burin as Super Boink. And I'd certainly love to see Cha Cha again, fantastic show.
But one not on this list that I'd love to see again, remake or otherwise, is Saint Tail. |

I agree that Nurse Angel Ririka and Hime-chan's Ribbon both deserve to get licensed. I haven't seen much of the latter, but I saw the former and it's great! Plus, 2021 has been a great year for Corrector Yui, as a fansub group managed to give the series complete fansubs for the first time ever!

Hime-chan no Ribbon has even more SMAP. The OP and EDs, not replaced in the home video Japanese release, and an entire episode called "SMAP came" where SMAP comes to her school and they have voiced lines. SMAP was brand new at the time. |

Nurse Angel Ririka SOS is one of my favorites. Unlike most mahou shoujo, it's pretty damn bleak. And I loved it. Also one of the best "antagonist turned ally" arcs even done in this genre.
Oh, and I've seen Cha Cha, and you're right, there's no transphobia. Most just don't like Doris because.. well.... she's a terrible person. |

One can only hope that, similar to Discotek managing to get Tokio back into Kodocha's English release, J&A won't be as picky about SMAP being in Hime-chan by this point (i.e. "After Johnny Kitagawa's death"), especially since SMAP actually disbanded back in 2016, so it's not like it'd be actively promoting an act that's still around. |

This was actually a major thing when Futari wa Pretty Cure came out , because it was the first Magical Girl anime to show the characters actually fighting back with kicks and punches . We get beaten up a lot , cos we·re half the size of most of the people we take on , yet Purikyua was actually a groundbreaking series for women·s empowerment by showing that we didn·t have to rely strictly on physical fighting or magical powers , we could use both . Hard to believe that merely 19 years ago it was groundbreaking that girls could in fact fight back . And we still kicked Neo, Trinity, Morpheus·s ass . Kind of puts things in perspective , Né? |

I strongly disliked Ririka because the heroine is constantly told by the male characters surrounding her what to do and how to do it. That certainly wouldn't fly for a post-girlpower audience. Her male helper also gets to just teleport and energy blast enemies without transforming or chanting, while Ririka has to do all that beforehand :/ The ending indeed gets kinda wonky because of overtaking the manga. Not one I'd vote to redo.
Re: Akazukin ChaCha, there's a similarly-named but AFAIK unrelated anime Fairy Musketeer Akazukin which I'd love to see a new release of. It's one of my favorite magical girl anime that seems sadly very much unknown by fans. Other older magical girl anime that deserve more attention are FanFan Pharmacy and Fushigiboshi No Futagohime (season one, not season two). |

I remember watching plenty of magical girl shows back in the late 90s and early 2000s, Cardcaptor Sakura was my favourite, though I also saw Corrector Yui and Magic Knight Rayearth, Tonde Burin was also boradcasted on Fox Kids here in Latin America though my memories about that show are pretty vague.
There were a few magical girl shows licensed here in Lat Am recently, Creamy Mami got a dub a couple of years ago (which is a rarity for a show that old), and Anime Onegai announced a dub for Full Moon wo Sagashite. Also, Crunchyroll dubbed Magia Record into Neutral Spanish despite the fact that Madoka Magica never got dubbed |

Well yeah... but he's also pretty much useless except for support. He can't actually fight, let alone cure anyone. But, he and Dewey did get an epic moment while stalling. |
