There is also probably the biggest reason for the huge sales, which is that the blu rays came with codes for the gacha game. The show might be good and popular on its own, but there is no way that I believe that just the anime is several times more popular than all the other animes of the season combined.

Well deserved! Uma Musume is one of my favorites, I enjoyed it as much as 10x than any Monogatari season.

This is definitely the #1 reason. The awful Granblue animes sold way more than they should've for the same reason |

I was hoping for a lot more of that kind of information, also missing from the article is the price of the blue ray compared to other show and maybe some sort of look at whether the sales were all at release or had a tail and maybe some discussion of the view numbers and such. As it stand the article is more like a review of the show, which is perfectly legitimate article but doesn't really touch on the nitty gritty of why certain work sell better than other, which rarely as much to do with the actual quality of the show. |

I was wondering why this was getting a full article when, as you say, the codes for the gacha is the real reason. Should have just been a column explaining why the author liked the show instead of saying 'it's the best-selling TV anime because....' when that's not the whole story |

Was reading the article wondering when this was going to come up and the wall of text just kept going without any mention of it. |

Interesting, and interestingly detailed, look at this series.
All you folks complaining about no mention of the game-codes: game-code presence in the blu-rays does not explain the change in quality between the two seasons, which is what the article/video is really about, even if the headline chose to highlight sales. |

Which is totally fine. Uma Musume's quality is a giant jump between S1 to S2. But the blurb says "as we take a deep dive into what might have made this new record holder so successful" but does not mention the actual reason why it is the best-selling TV anime as that's a very big and notable reason. As the other poster said, it would be like making an article about why Granblue Fantasy anime was such a top seller without mentioning the gacha codes that came with it. |

I paid 10.4K yen per LE BD volume (4 of them) compared to Love Live Superstar which was 10.8k per LE volume and there are 6 of those and also tracks for every other JP show I imported so buying all volumes of Uma Musume s2 is cheaper then buying some of the other shows. Most of the sales were at release, It did sell out every week so it had a bit of a tail for when later orders were fulfilled. It did drop fairly fast whenever a new volume came out though, most of the sales were upfront. -- And gonna mention this again but people keep raving about the game-codes that are the reason why it sold so much and while that is partly true, people should not forget that every anime has had some sort of code(game, live, etc) as a bonus for like the past 12 years to try and boost sales. The show was also just plain popular but that not something people apparently want to admit. |

I wonder if the writer of this knows that all the horse girls and the races in the show are based on real life horses. This includes their characters designs which are based around the horses looks etc. Things like Twin turbo wining that race in the second season along with Teio winning after recovering from her injury did happen.

I am so baffled at how this topic could be broached and not even mention the mobile game codes that are bundled with the video releases. Like, how is that possible? To not mention the largest reason that it sold as much as it did? Simply baffling. There's a reason you can pick up a used BluRay of a volume of the series for like 700 yen on Amazon Japan which it's supposed to cost 10,000 yen. Because without the codes they have so very little value.
Like here's my shopping cart for used copies from Bookoff's Amazon marketplace store for the 4 singles of the second season of Uma Musume with a grand total of 6,560 yen, which is so ridiculously cheap. Last edited by Megiddo on Sat Mar 12, 2022 4:05 am; edited 1 time in total |

There's nothing wrong with having a review of the show, but this article wasn't presented as a review of the show. Game-code presence may not explain quality changes, but it does explain sales, which is what the article says it's supposed to be about. You talk like it's perfectly fine for an article's title to say one thing and then to have the article itself talk about something else. People should absolutely call that kind of thing out.
Look, I hate the male self-insert trope as much as anyone can, but the trainer in this anime doesn't really fit that. As far as male characters in female-led series go, he's easily on the better end; he's not the protagonist in any way, he has an actual personality, and none of the girls show any romantic interest in him. It sounds like you're just mad that he exists at all. |

I like how you call s1 a flop when it averaged 27k for bds with Granblue tickets (which I suppose you personally consider a flop for a Cygames show with Granblue tickets included?) but that's still a pretty high peak considering state of BDs in 2018 which as far as I'm aware and looked at sales spreadsheet still the second highest in sales from 2018 only beating by Violet Evergarden in late night anime. Which isn't what I would say is being considered a flop at all. But keep being you with all of this negative hate. The game was also supposed to come out before season 1 before the eternal delays so maybe if that didn't happen the show would have included codes for their own IP in season 1 so hypothetically speaking, would you still hate it that season 2 sold so much if that was the case? Funny you mention Love Live though, it SOLD well because it had codes for a lottery for a chance to be able to go to their lives (which means there's another 10k+ fee to pay for). (they're doing it with the CD's too) which is the very same practice happening here but apparently this practice is fine when it's codes from their own IP???? So in particular Uma Musume season 2 also counts then as it only had codes for their own IP?
That's pretty common though? I imported several bds for shows multitudes cheaper compared to release price because whatever code was included was already been used. This a good way to import for cheap. |

my only complaint is that numbers were not mentioned, that's bad for a best seller article, it's like making an article about a ghibli movie winning multiple international awards but not saying which awards it won.
also, kemono friends is suspiciously absent, considering 8t was the precious record holder with 120k+ units per disc , tho, iirc it is not in the regular sales list but on list more related to book sales because of tej way the discs were packaged. still no mention of the previous record holder is not good. |

I dunno man. I think "fascinated" more accurately describes the person who made a second account to once again yell about the show and how it's destroying the sanctity of anime by having a single male character. |
