Wow that’s a bummer, since that reference-heavy episode is THE reason I got into Osomatsu fandom in the first place

One reason I can't be too unhappy about the existence of piracy.

Not a surprise considering it wasn't on the release in Japan, though still a bit disappointing. At least they let people know ahead of time.

Disappointing, but not surprising considering how the episode was scrubbed from streaming sites and, as far as I’m aware, never released on home video either. It’s a safe bet that episode will never be legally available anywhere ever again.

Kinda dumb considering that's basically all of Excel Saga.

I expected as much. I don't blame Viz for this, the situation regarding that episode is beyond their control.
I wonder if they'll include episode 3.5 though...

Don't blame companies for circumstances beyond their control. It's not Viz's fault that they're literally unable to to release that episode. It's just like with JJBA and the Western band names: blame the studio/writers for making choices that make it legally problematic to release their work as-is.
No one will or should hold it against Osomatsu-fans who buy the legal release and pirate the one unavailable episode.

To be fair, JJBA takes it too far. Some names I can see causing trouble, sure, but "Echoes"? That's a generic word.

This is to stop reverse importation, as there is no way legal reason why it wouldn't be allowed to release state side, as parody is perfectly legal..

What? This is the full product. Not even Japan got episode 1 except when it aired on TV at first. Literally no company in the world will be able to get rights to that episode.

What was so controversial about episode 1? Also I've seen plenty of anime showing some anime character stills or references from other series and no news about how controversial those episodes are.

Often those are references to works by the same creator or studio, and if not, whatever is referenced is probably first negotiated with the other party, which probably didn't happen with Osomatsu-kun...

@dragonquiz
It varies, and in Mr. Osomatsu's case, a company did complain. I believe its from Anpanman, so something going on with that franchise and what happened in the episode cause episode 1 to be scrubbed from all legal sources.
Its a bummer about the lost episode. I'm used to such things being incomplete, but I can understand if someone doesn't.
