How do projects like this get green lighted??? This looks beautiful and stupid at the same time. Oshii has failed me entirely.

The Wikipedia page says something about a new method of funding
Quote: | The series is funded by a single investor, Ichigo Animation, a subsidiary of Ichigo Inc., a new financing arrangement in Japanese anime that replaces the “sclerotic production committee system” and gives directors like Oshii and Nishimura more freedom, |

Isn't it basically the same thing that is happening with the new Griasaia films? the difference is that in the case of Vlad it is a japanese government company that is sponsoring, while with Grisaia it is only the studio itself.

This seems like such a departure for Oshii, a fairly run-of-the-mill modern anime premise.

Is Oshii letting his Urusei Yatsura side out? It's true, it does look "beautiful and stupid", but that's better than merely looking stupid, which is the case for a depressingly large proportion of anime.
I'll certainly check it out, and probably persist with it longer than I should, just because of Oshii.
The article teaser-image on the ANN front-page reminds me a lot of Yoshizaki Hibiki's short Me! Me! Me!, but the encyclopedia doesn't list any involvement by them in this anime.

Oshii has done whacky comedy like this in the 80s and 90s.
Stylistically, it looks similar to Gosenzo-sama

My point of reference for Mamoru Oshii were the Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor movies (and Jin Roh but that doesn't count?) so learning he also did comedies was a a surprise. I really liked what the previous trailer showed:- a lot of slapstick violence and very funny reaction faces. Crossing my fingers and hoping that it will be good
