Hey, y'all!

I got the Mospeada box set yesterday. so far I've only watched the first disc, but wow! This is a very cool show. Granted it's not as a good as the original Macross, but it is growing on me. At first Mospeada did not seem as compelling as I thought it would be. Yellow's music is not as catchy as Minmay's, but I think I just need to get into it more. By the end of the first disc, I was ready to watch more of the show. So here are some of my thoughts on some aspects of the show.

The picture: After reading the ANN review of the Robotech New Generation DVD, I was afraid the picture quality might not be as nice as it could be. But, so far I think the picture quality is really good. I can't tell whether the footage was "restored" like Macross, but if not then that's OK because the picture looks very nice. As finances allow, I still want to get all the Robotech DVDs for the purposes of reliving more memories and comparing them with the original shows.

The animation: After seeing the original Macross animation for the first time in a very long time (hadn't seen it since Robotech which is what introduced me to most of these shows.) I was expecting the quality of the animation to be along the lines of Macross. I figured it would be a bit inconsistant. In Macross, the animation and art are inconsistent, but I can only think of a few partiucular sequences which are drawn very horrendously. With Mospeada, the quality on average is much better. The animation is a little more fluid and the art is more consistent.

The music: The music is very high quality. But, I'm still used to Minmay singing "My Boyfriend Is A Pilot", "Sunset Beach", "0-G Love" etc... as well as the magnificient Macross opening song. Maybe Yellow's songs will grow on me too?

The story: I saw Robotech a long time ago when my friend taped off of TV and we would go to his house to watch it. So, I don't remember many details of the New Generation Story. I can tell this definately has a much different feel from the Robotech version. It's more gripping in comparison to what I remember from Robotech, but not as gripping as the orginal Macross (which I believe is my very favourite anime right now.)

Overall this is a great package. Included with the 5 DVDs is a 22 page booklet containing interviews and articles from the original production staff. You get to find out from these people their perspective and memories of being involved in the production of Mospeada.

BTW, when I was much younger, (and before Robotech was unleashed on pop culture) I used to go to a super market called Eagle. Anybody remember that store? Well, they had one of the most memorable toy sections ever. I actually saw Mospeada toys there. Mostly, I remember the smaller plastic Mospeada (Cyclones for Robotech people) and Legioss Fighters (Alpha Fighters) All of these where tansformable and used only plastic parts. They might have even had the larger size toys of both vehicles which where more ruggedly constructed and included some die cast parts. But, all these Mospeada toys came in Mospeada packaging. All the text on the boxes was in English and on the back of the box it mentioned journeying to "Reflex Point". Eventually Eagle went out of business and they where the only store I remember seeing those toys in in that packaging. Later on when Robotech came out, I was delighted to see the those intriguing motorcycle and fighter jet mechas in action. Eventully, those toys I had seen at Eagle where available at any toy store only this time in Robotech packaging. And now, to my delight, I'm getting to see Mospeada in its orginal form. This is a very engaging show so far with some of my favourite mecha designs ever. I highly recommend for anybody interested in their anime roots. (And if you havn't seen it yet, check out Macross, it's the coolest, IMO, but Mospeada's not too far behind it.)
