any clarity whether this is a direct sequel to the anime? or is the 2nd movie the direct sequel? i think that should be in the article

This is definitely a direct sequel to the anime. I believe the two previous movies were compilation films.

This is definitely a direct sequel to the anime. I believe the two previous movies were compilation films. |

Content of manga past what I presume the film will cover is unbroadcastable. I mean, they made a tv anime of Yumetsukai so if you're willing to take those sorts of liberties with the source it's not impossible, but...

Oh...oh dear...well I'm hoping they find a way around that. Amazon maybe? Recently I think Vinland Saga had the uncut version of an episode on Amazon whilst the public got a gimped version.

I doubt it. This model of theatrical films following a TV series is becoming more common. Princess Principal is another example. It's seems a bit strange with so much of the studios' revenues coming from overseas where the movies are not very available, at least legally.

I haven't read it myself, but just for some context based on reactions from people who have read it... it appears the author decided Mitty's story wasn't anywhere near disturbing or body-horror enough, and decided to outdo himself. Recursively. The good news is, it doesn't sound like it's more lolicon stuff...?
However, it sounds like part 1 of "and you though Mitty was scary, lmao" will be in this movie... so there's that to consider. This series may become a serious test of what Japan actually considers unbroadcastable. The first season never would have played uncut on TV in the US, so they're already beyond our standards for that sort of thing.

I disagree about this being "unbroadcastable",horror anime have aired before. What I do disagree with is this marketing trying to make Made in Abyss a feel good adventure romp-When this arc the movie is adapting,and even moreso the subsequent manga arcs, is straight up body horror(and kids in questionable situations).

I tend to agree with the others that a lot of this content is essentially unbroadcastable. Yes, there's been horror TV anime broadcast before, but not really on the same sort of level. Made in Abyss is actually a bit difficult to categorize as it doesn't have any of the normal objectionable content like blood/gore, nudity, sex, drugs, alcohol, gambling, or profanity, but it absolutely does have some "adult" sort of content which I doubt anyone would be OK showing on TV. Combine that content with the fact that it looks so cutsey on the surface and yeah....I don't see that being broadcast anywhere.
As for the "feel good adventure romp", there's a fine line they are treading there. On the one hand, Made in Abyss certainly captures the "wonder of adventure" sort of feeling. In fact I think it's one of the best treatments of that which I've seen in anime in a very long time, and it's a major reason for the title's success. But it's really easy to misunderstand "wonder of adventure" as "kid-friendly entertainment", which of course this show is decidedly not. Normally I'm not really in favor of parental warnings on movies and whatnot, but this is one where the cover artwork looks really misleading if one has no idea about the content at all. I hope they make the age rating real clear on this one!

Regarding marketing: You also kinda don't wanna give away the twists/spoilers since being caught off-guard by them is a big part of their impact. It's one of those shows which is best first-experienced (imho) going in as blind as possible. Similar to how Madoka Magica was played up as a 100% rainbows-and-cupcakes magical girl show through its first 2 episodes.

I agree completely. Personally, I love the surprise from these kinds of shows that seem very innocent on the surface but then there is something much darker lurking beneath. It's one of the major reasons I love both Madoka Magica and Made in Abyss. But, I'm an adult who knows what he is getting into when I watch these shows. I'm not merely OK with this kind of content, I welcome it. But imagine that some busy parent is looking for something for the kids to watch at a store or using a streaming app: the "cover art" for MiA looks very kid-friendly. If someone were ignorant of anime in general, had no idea what MiA is, and sticks their kids in front of it I can imagine some very upset people.
And that's a fine line to maintain. Like you said, you don't want to give away spoilers that ruin the plot for the real fans, but at the same time you don't want some ignorant parent letting young kids watch it.
