The full story posted on the japantimes website also says that the decision is not absolute and that local franchises will be able to decide whether or not they will continue to sell such magazines and very likely some of them will be retained.

It will be curious to see how many convenience stores in Japan end up removing their adult magazines by the time we get to the 2020 Olympics though with the name being FamilyMart it makes a little more sense than when 7-Eleven announced it. What I find ironic about this situation is that these stores are removing adult magazines but they will still be selling cigarettes.

The Japanese government owns 1/3 of Japan's cigarette industry, even in Tokyo where cigarette laws are the toughest in the country, it is still allowed to smoke in several establishments that meet certain requirements, and there is still the fact that 20% of Japanese people smoke. While most people buy adult magazines online or in specialized locations, they would not lose much banning it, accounting for less than 1% of sales.

Also, in a country where whispers and judgmental gossip can literally destroy your career, nobody wants to be seen protesting a ban on the magazines.
That's one of the ways Prohibition ended over here, since we were sympathetic with politicians who just wanted a drink or a cigarette, and those doing the banning were seen as in the wrong--And why comparisons with national drug legalization are doomed to failure.

At least it's not absolute, but I do have a feeling that a few stores will do so anyway if the owners think that it will make them a lo more money. It may not be so bad as long as Comiket and such aren't affected.

With how Netflix and modern video gaming is with phased out content, how there are increasing hacking and cyber attacks, and a want to detach from electronics and the internet for one's mental health, yeah, there's gonna be. I remember a certain scenario with Dex in Megaman Battle Network 3 in that in a world where everything is online and linked up to the net, physical hardcopy media for the kicks is eventually going to heed a return. The west also tends to overestimate how technologically advanced Japan is. For every story we get about butt washers, rice cookers with over 150 settings that shift during the cooking process and platinum coating for the maximum nutritional output and taste, that's about a thousand more not computer savvy and technologically active, and otherwise, Japan for most is not a very hardcore technological country. There's a reason why otaku there also overlap with techies and computer wizes.
Plus, didn't you hear about the man who had a heart attack and died in his porn mag collection room buried under his copies? I don't doubt that he is the only one who has a collection....

I can't help feel this is an excuse to get out of any contracts with the publishing companies.
Magazine sales are falling even if slower in Japan than most countries and if there are multi year agreements in place between the stores and publishers this could be a way to get out of it with a smaller financial hit.

Just curious why the article used that photo. Picture was probably taken from a travel agency, showing travel guides at the front, so not even porn mags nor a convenience store...
Surely there were better photos that could be used to better ilustrate the article, even if the reasoning behind it was a reference to visitors coming to Japan more and more, specially during the Olympics.
