Well, mystery solved. I had no idea that SEED was reworked to such an extent, but I have to give Sunrise credit for deciding to make the extra effort.

Did they rework Destiny to make it a bearable season?

There's a long thread on one of the Audio Boards on re-building your SONY DAT drive, which is no simple undertaking. Then there is an issue with tapes from one drive not working right in a different drive. This is why when usable audio masters are available the first thing to do is to transfer them to something more current / stable, then you need to revisit them periodically to move them to newer technology. Which is a bother that I'm sure studios the world over don't want to mess with.

A good bit of the SEED dub can still be used. I'd go as far to say that'd it be cheaper and quicker to have the original cast redo the parts that can't be fixed instead of completely redoing it.

I could think of one anime that's in serious need of a re-dubbing: Slam Dunk. If you listen to its dub, you'd think that all characters sounded the same. Confused

Still, none of this explains or excuses the number of English dubs Dragon Ball has had over the years. Funimation even redubbed their own restart "just because"... just because they were putting it on DVD and it wasn't just for broadcast anymore.

Wait, was their intermediate Frieza dub put on VHS? It was when they were trying to sound like the Ocean dub but gave up when they realized it wasn't worth it. I mean possible. Necessary, that's the one. I still hear clips of it every now and then but it's starting to pass into legend these days.

I'm expecting another redub of Dragon Ball any day now... partly as an anniversary thing, partly so they could resell it again, partly because dubbing DB/DBZ is what they do.

I thought it was Ghost in the Shell: Innocence that got a redub, for the PAL speed-up reasons mentioned earlier.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0 got a redub for the Japanese audio, as they changed the gender of a character, but I seem to remember it used the old English dub.

I was under the impression that most fans already knew that SEED was getting a new dub because the old dub was not going to sync with all changes made to the show as a result of the HD remaster.

I better question to me is why is Sunrise bothering to dub a well regarded by not super popular show in SEED and pretty disliked show in SEED Destiny. I seriously doubt a new dub is going to bring new and more casual fans to Gundam. And I assume hardcore Gundam fans would have been content with a sub-only released of HD SEED and Destiny.

I hope things work out for Sunrise, but this dub looks like a risky idea. Sunrise should have considered Kickstarting the dub and gouge fans, I mean gauge interest from fans, like Funimation did with Escaflowne.

As much as I love the original SEED dub I'm also looking forward to the new one as well. With the reworking of scenes it's not as easy as just syncing up some lines and dubbing a few new ones. If Sunrise feels a whole new dub is in order then so be it. Whatever it takes to get SEED over here in HD and in English.

That depends on the viewer, considering I found the show bearable the first time and actually more bearable to sit through than the last season of IBO.

It amazes me how much hate is thrown on a meh show like Destiny, it's really not worth it when I watched IBO mess itself up more.

Check it out, it's on Crunchyroll. The second part of the show is still as bad as ever, with stock footage and recap episodes one after another and all that jazz.

One of those recap episodes actually works for getting the mindset on Durandal. But yeah too many recaps and stock footage, though overall I just found the show to be meh.

Well, they added some boobs and panties. That's.... about it, really.

Though to be honest I can no longer hate SEED Destiny. Not after the last half of IBO.
That was FAR worse then Destiny at its lowest.
