What a great interview! I'm tickled that Nihei has his own favorite American comic book shop. I have that over-sized edition of BLAME! on pre-order, and i can't wait for the Blame anime, should be fun

I just looked up Nihei's other works and they're all look like stories I can get into. All of them are very dark and gritty.

Great interview of one of my all-time favorite author, you can feel the passion and enthusiasm in his answers.
As a big fan of Tsutomu Takahashi, other than his working methods I feel that his style has a major influence on Nihei.

I couldn't have said it better!!! I really love his worlds, and this interview gave some insight and back story that's so informative. I too can't wait for the BLAME manga and the new anime.
I also love and own Knights, but I beg and plead for an anime for BIOMEGA
Thanks a million ANN for this article and interview!!!

Regarding Sidonia(watching season 1 is required so you won't be spoiled), does Nihei regret killing off Hoshijiro considering that character is a fan favorite(at least the places I've seen)?

He did make mention of his changing his art direction to be more viewer friendly. I do hope he will keep his darker elements in his works. I'm glad to see just that in Knights.
You can sort of see what he means in that series.
I wouldn't have guessed that the black in white art would be so difficult vs. color and "fine line" drawings. I do understand it from the perspective of drawing very small characters in a huge environment. Of course the dark vastness is what has greatly appealed to me from the get go.

Very fortuitous timing where art and technology can intersect to bring out more in each other. Certainly Sidonia could've happened without CG but it just wouldn't have been as awesome. Slightly stiffer character models is a small price to pay to make an entire Nihei universe your oyster, rendered in full-depth, to say nothing of the cinematic large scale battles where multi-angle rendering really shines.

Great interview! It was more natural than other interviews I've read where a guest or their handlers seem to be more cautious with their responses.
I loved Blame! when I read it and couldn't put it down. Because there wasn't a ton of dialogue it reinforced the sense of emptiness and the size of the megalithic structures. It felt like anything living was dwarfed by these monuments that had their genesis in some long ago past. It gave you the feeling that the character of Killy had been walking in this world forever. I talk about senses and feelings because that's what the work evoked for me when I read it. Its like a throwback to older serial stories where the protagonist is on a never ending journey, sometimes those stories took place in a wasteland or post-apocalyptic setting. I don't think everybody would like Blame! and for all of its atmosphere it does have some weaknesses. I'm looking forward to the anime.
I own all the Tokyopop releases and I never thought this would get a re-release in manga and certainly not an anime. It also makes perfect sense that they need to inject perhaps some more drama into the anime. Otherwise, it would be more like an experimental arthouse film. I look forward to adding the new larger release to my collection and it will give me an excuse to re-read it. I just wish it was in hardback (yea, I'd pay more for that). There are other authors that I wouldn't mind seeing larger versions of their work.
The end of the article states that Knights of Sidonia is streaming on Netflix, but should also say that the first season has been released by Sentai and second season will be released in November.
