I really would like to get into the fate franchise..but at the same time i am so overwhelmed by the different takes to the story, routes, spin offs, alternatives, remakes etc... it is hard to enter into it. how does one manage to keep himself/herself updated with all of this content?

If you want to go into fate, reasonable starting points are the Fate VN, 2006 or 2014 series, or F/Z anime.
After that just read some summaries and see what strikes your fancy. Not that much is fully translated in English anyway. |

That's excessive. They should just watch the Fate/Zero anime followed by either Fate/Stay Night 2006 or 2014 or 2006 then 2014. That is the easiest way to get into this series

Don't get me wrong. I'm a complete nasu-tard but i'm also of the opinion that everyone should do whatever they want, the way they want. If you want do go for fate/zero first, then go for it. If you want to go for Carnival Phantasm first, same thing. I'm just saying that such thing as "proper order" exist and should be followed for a proper understanding of the world. Btw when i say order i'm not talking about something like "order in which you should watch KnK's movies", i'm talking about order as in "you should watch/read/play this first so you can get the most of the next material you consume".
Yeah. If it's just "getting into the series" then i 100% agree with you. My comment was directed more at those that have a already consumed a bit, as small as that bit is, and know that they will continue to delve into the nasuverse. I made the post about the order (please disregard the racist/mean part of it, 4chan is full of people like that) so that people who have already made up their minds about if they're going to continue or not, can have an idea of where to "start". I mean, i don't really advise someone that has only seen Fate/Stay Night or Fate/Zero to watch Carnival Phantasm next. {Edit: Please refrain from excessive quoting.. I edited your post for you.
