I've never been able to find any chapters besides the first two online, but WHOA, HOLY CRAP, FINALLY! I gotta head over to my Barnes & Noble ASAP! |

For my schools, mock trials were done one in the speech and debate clubs. Is it more common to have ones where the whole class joins up?
The lack of notes that could've been potentially useful were not in the weekly Shonen Jump digital releases either, and "ronpa" is indeed left untranslated. A theme of Gakkyu Hotei is avoiding jumping to conclusions. Most of the cases Inugami takes on in this part of the series have explanations that turn out to be much more innocent than they might appear to be to an adult reading it. This ties into the theme where you assume some horrible kid-unfriendly thing is going on but it turns out, well, you're just assuming the worst. It's a real shame this series was cut short, but I guess to the kdis it was aimed at in Japan, some of these situations probably struck too close for comfort. |

I mostly enjoyed reading this when it was being published in ESJ, but I'm not sure if I'd actually buy the volumes. There were some really fun and interesting cases, but that time they went to the pool was just way too fan servicey for a manga about elementary school students... even though I liked everything else about this manga, it kinda ruined it for me. A really poor attempt at trying to save it from being cancelled, I guess.
It is nice to see Viz release Shonen Jump series that didn't really survive (but that are still good, quick reads), but I'm sure this one is only getting a physical release because Obata. I'd buy Stealth Symphony in a second though! |

Just bought volume 1 a few hours ago, and I gotta say, it seems like a real shame this ended at only 3 volumes, because I believe there were a lot more possibilities for this, like Sherlock Bones.
That kinda reminds me of Bakuman, what with the PCP manga and whatnot.  I was never really sure if that whole "looking at it from a kid's perspective" thing would really work, but they managed to do so with this! It helps that Obata drew this along with Bakuman, so the art really sells it.
Besides the ultimately innocent nature of the cases, I like how each case is only 2 chapters long. Mystery manga tends to be a lot longer with cases, so this was a nice touch, although it could come off as a little fast-paced for some. But I personally enjoyed it.
I can't wait for volume 2. |

Same with Sherlock Bones and Kurogane. There was so much unncessary ecchi in there, they seemed more fitting for a seinen magazine. |

On a bitter note, I wonder when the author's weird philosophies towards women are going to come out?
But seriously, is it just me or are a lot of these weird "whodunnits" coming out of Japan lately? The 999 series, Danganronpa, Euphoria (though that's, er, 'adult rated'), now Gakkyu Hotei. I'm really curious what's behind the rise of this weird little genre lately, though it at least works out when there's decent writing involved. |

Don't think this was meant for the elementary school set. Whether it is a great message or not, it is a reality for some. Will have to take a gander at this, and see if the art is just as good as the cover. |

Judging and condemning other students over minor incidents, or over nothing at all is something school children do everyday (even with no evidence). That is why school is so "fun".

Yeah, a major reason I liked Gakkyu Hotei so much is that, except for using sexual appeal to manipulate others, it's one of the few series to depict elementary school life the way I remembered it, and the only Japanese series in that short list of mine. |

I developed a deep love for mystery/detective manga since Ace Attorney and Detective Conan, so I'm not complaining about this boom one bit! Also, I thought of AA first when I first read about Gakkyu Hotei, not Danganronpa, even though I knew of both series at the time. Maybe it's because Danganronpa was inspired by AA, but eh. |
