13% is a bit small, but it's not bad. Here's hoping the manga sales will keep growing through the future.

Makes me quite happy.
I had a very anti-manga teacher in my first year of college in 2008 (who was the final reason for me to transfer from that school, the best decision I made in my entire life,) who claimed that manga was done, and that the entirety of the USA hated manga and they would never sell again. And here I am, years later, where I can go to NYCC and still see a huge representation and fanbase of the Japanese arts in general (manga, anime, video games, etc.) As a big manga reader, it's great to know it's still doing well. |

A slow but respectable growth is the best way. When sales go up like a rocket, they usually come straight down like one as well. The last thing we need is another bubble either in manga or anime sales.

Yeah,the recession really did a number on the manga industry here. It's recovery nicely so far. I do worry with companies like Yen Press,with the amount LN's their picking up,which aren't cheap to translate,and considering how most of the LN's they got aren't done yet. |

Definitely nice to see! Even with scanlation sites all over the place still, it's nice to see people still picking up actual copies
 Looks like it might be the same thing as retro games being popular: the fanbase is old enough to buy these things. As someone who started buying/collecting anime/manga during the peak of the bubble in the early 00s, it's nice to see a bit of a similar thing happen in popularity, despite scans/subs/ streams.

Yeah, I'm not sure about the Yen Press LN strategy. They keep picking up more and more series but they still have a ridiculously huge backlog of volumes to translate. |

Yen Press started small with only a few LN titles. Wasn't Spice & Wolf one of their first? After apparent initial success they have started to expand their selections. To the extent that anyone can predict the market, they appear to know what they are doing. Certainly they have a better idea as to what will sell than any of us.
Also they are part of a large international publishing concern. That has good and bad aspects. Good in that they have deep pockets. One or two poor selling titles will not kill them. Bad in that upper level management may just pull the plug if they are unhappy. That is what happened to CMX. |
