Aw... that's a shame...
I kinda admit the show is following the shounen formula pretty close, but I've had a lot of fun watching Kekkaishi in a way that I haven't had in a very long time. There's a charm in it that the new long-running shounen shows haven't reached lately. I can't put my finger on what, but it's there. |

While I wasn't impressed with it, Kekkaishi did do well on Cartoon Network, so it will be interesting to see if it's success carries over into sales.

Man, I've been collecting the manga almost since they started coming out! I'm not sure if I agree with the "no risks" assessment, but I will admit that the first 5 volumes do follow that formula until Gen is introduced. Odds are that the first 5 volumes or so are the first 13 eps, but I think it's easily one of the better shonen manga to come over here, it just certainly starts off slowly to put it bluntly. Not bad or anything, just slow.

Well when I look for adaptations of foreign works all I want is accurate translations with as little as possible signal-to-noise loss distancing the translation from the original. |

Agree with the review on all accounts. While I found the series tolerable enough to watch it through to the end, it rarely qualified as a high-priority view when I had to DVR stuff and the early episodes in particular bored me with their blandness and inanity.

This is easily one of my favorite shonen shows. I just simply like the characters and the story. I also like the fact that the main characters didn't use traditional attacks. Using barriers was interesting to me.

I agree with this review. When I tried out watching this on AS when it first came out I got pretty bored and stopped watching. But then when they reached the... idk how to say, end of the season (I don't know if it was though), I was like "eh, I'll give it another try" and kinda got interested. But I did feel the "this was all done before" vibe. The guy JUST so happened to have a strong hidden power that he can't control and blah blah.
Short version is: it may seem pretty decent enough to watch, but it is certainly not a show I'd remember. |

I definitely don't agree with you, Kekkaishi is the only shonen show I've actually watched and enjoyed in the past decade (I'm 28 so definitely not in the shonen age range) and I can tell you it's much more than a generic alternative to the shonen genre. On the contrary, it's probably the only cleverly written and efficiently directed shonen series with characters we can actually relate to and adult themes - along with FMA:B - that I have seen in the 2000's. Nurarihyon no Mago is a shame of a Kekkaishi copycat though, and much weaker though.

I don't know about other viewers but personally I liked the TV series a great deal and some of the Ayakashi designs were very unique. Sure it started off and moved at a slog, but it picks up and starts to get nifty enough to warrant finishing. I especially loved spoiler[the battle between Byaku and Heisuke; ultimate showdown right there].
Quick question for anyone in the know: is the manga longer for Kekkaishi? |

Yes. The anime only covers about the first dozen volumes. Viz recently released the 26th volume, and the series is scheduled to end with the 33rd, IIRC. |

May apply to what this volume covers, but I don't think it does to later episodes or the rest of the manga.
Kekkaishi is one of the smartest, and more daring shonen manga I've seen in a while in my opinion (at least one that doesn't make me want to dig out the character's eyeballs with a rusty spoon like Death Note did...) |

It's hard to disagree with this review because the show definitely starts off as a typical shonen show with nothing special to offer. Eventually things get interesting because the characters do a lot of cool stuff with their powers.
I dunno if I would have rated everything a C though. |

As mediocre as the review makes this show out to be, the premise still seemed intriguing enough for me to check out... Until I saw Vic Mignogna was voicing the lead. Dammit, Viz, stop doing that!

I might have to check this out, even if the show is generic since I seem to be attracted to those types of shows. If I do decide to buy the series, I will wait until it is completely released before I purchase it.
