It doesn't hurt that the light novel and manga don't have exactly the same storylines, encouraging fans to get both to see things from a different perspective.
The adaptation on air now won't go too far, but if it sells well there'll be a legion of fans clamouring for more.

Me neither. Which is the anime based off of (if any)? And how do they differ?

Comic adaptation is only two volumes in, so too early to see if which rabbit hole it'll follow.
Since 2010 an online adaptation based on the original print novels was published by Enterbrain. Despite the same setting, the storylines have forked showing different routes.

actually i thought the storylines were identical, the difference being that the LN is far more detailed that the manga and anime though the anime is more detailed than the manga. in terms of content it goes LN < anime < manga. because of that wile the LN 'feels' different its rather a result of not being able to adapt everything like the harry potter novels compared to the movies iirc the first movie omitted ALOT of content.
so the novel is the same it just expands on alot more, the most recent example would be the encounter with the "wise king of the forest" i think momonga went into more depth about explaining how the hamster reminded him of his friends and when he released his death aura the hamster started pleading for his life in far more detail and even that little monologue where he was saying he was embarrassed to be riding the hamster was expanded on by him describing how hard it was to sit and that he had to sit on him in an embarrassing way because of a lack of mount etc.

The difference you're talking about is between the web novel and the light novel. The story in the manga and the light novel is the same.

And again, you are wrong. Overlord started as a web novel in 2010, then Enterbrain picked up the series as a light novel in 2012.
The manga obviously follows the LN story, because there was no Albedo in the web novel.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. It'll be a while before I can go through the volumes though.

ah well that makes a lot more sense, I think I'll stick with the light novels.overlord without yandere/albedo just wouldn't be as interesting unless there was some sort of trade off

Oh yeah, I had heard about the web novels being a bit different. That's why I was confused about the LN/manga differing so much lol.
