This is from one of their PR Packets before the summit:
They were expecting 130,000 people. They got over 32,000. They moved the venue from Japan Town to Fort Mason, and charge an entrance fee. In 2014, they got 120,000 attendees, solely due to the Ramen Festival. The Ramen Festival took over the J-Pop summit and made it a terrible experience for everyone (see http://www.yelp.com/biz/ramen-yokocho-fest-2014-san-francisco ). The Ramen festival was advertised separately, and a lot of the Ramen Festival goers didn't even know about the J-Pop Summit until arriving. To decide that the J-Pop summit has outgrown Japan Town based on 2014's numbers is incredibly short sighted. Without the Ramen Festival there is plenty of space in Japan Town. Not even all the side streets were being utilized in 2014. This was a disservice to the stores in Japan Town. These stores usually get well deserved business during the summit, but this year, only the people interested in the films visited Japan Town. I hope the planning organization takes a look at these numbers and brings it back to Japan Town next year. It's where it belongs. If it was all about charging money, then, I don't know what to say. Surely you can come up with a pay scheme that doesn't involve moving the event? |
