What ever happened with Akira Club, it was never at my local Borders, and it seems that Amazon.com no longer carries it (ships in 1-3 months)

I just sent an email to Dark Horse (the U.S. Publisher) so maybe they will get back to me on it.

There's no release date listed anywhere on DH's site, so I'm guessing it's been pushed back indefinitely, and they'll post a new date when they have one.

I actually saw a couple of used ones on Amazon, but those could have been the Japanese edition. But I asked about it on the DH forums, where a couple of editors regularly post, so hopefully they'll get back to me soon. It would really suck if this fell through.

Well I got a reply back, which is pretty exciting because some places never get back to you.
Which is pretty good news. I can't wait to get my copy. |

I'd just love to see the art book put out at some point. Otomo's art style is so damn appealing to me, and has always stood out to me from all of the generic BESM character designs and lackluster backgrounds.
By any luck Akira Club won't go the way of Oh My Goddess! Color... |

Great, thanks for emailing them. DH's constant delays are annoying, but its almost always worth the wait. |

Yes, I remember ordering this from diamond months ago. I can't wait to get it though. Though I have the feeling it's going to come in with a whole bunch of other stuff I ordered.

My comic shop got in probably 20 copies of Akira Club in yesterday...and then I stupidly forgot to grab one before I checked out! D'oh! But yes, it is finally out there.
EDIT: Post 1000! Boo-ya! |

For those of you who are curious, Akira Club is indeed out and I highly recommend it. It's by no means your conventional artbook: you aren't going to get page after page of colored pin-ups. The bulk of the book is devoted to reprinting the b&w title-pages that accompanied each chapter in their initial serialization in Young Magazine. The majority of them are stunning, and some are amoung the most impressive art I've seen from Otomo, especially when he starts going for a high-concept approach rather than just drawing a character. It also features rough sketches and promotional artwork, as well as plentiful commentary by the man himself (including a very lengthy Q&A session). All-in-all more substantial than your average artbook in that it gives you insight into the actual creative process, and pretty much a must have for any self-respecting Otomo fan.
