Good news indeed. I can't wait until this gets released. But I'm sure it will get more screenings up until next year.

Nowhere near the Japanese gross though which was US$22,613,153 (by February 2nd). But I guess it's a good tally for an anime theatrical release in US?
To put the US gross in perspective, you'd fund approximately a pair of episodes of your everyday anime with it... |

^It's only released on maybe 30 screens in the US. Big movies are released on about 3000.

Considering the fact that there is little to no advertising for this, the fact its not only an animated film but an international animated film, and that it's released to a very limited amount of theaters (to the point I can't see it myself) I have to say they're having a very impressive turn out! Can't wait to watch it when it gets a home release! |

I saw it a few weekends ago and am now considering importing it because I don't know if I can wait for it to come out on Blu-ray here.

Well I'm comparing it's overall gross to that of Poppy Hill's, as that made a little over a million dollars in its run. But that film did have Miyazaki's name attached to it. By limited release standards this is definitely a good turn out. I just wish it'd show somewhere near me. I'd pay to see this movie like three times in a row if I could! It's a shame that even though it grossed a decent amount of cash in Japan, it still didn't cover more than half of its overall production cost. That's partially the reason why Ghibli's on a supposed break now.

I'm considering importing it because no theater anywhere near me will show the freaking thing. And now I'm at my wits end. And it even includes the English dub! Japan actually gets that before we do. GKIDS is awesome but they take way too long to release their films on home video. |

Considering where the exchange rate is at, I would recommend going for the import. I just did that myself, in fact. After the conversion I only paid $45 for the movie and it comes in a pretty nice digipack case from what my friend said. To me it was worth it. GKids is extremely unlikely to put out any kind of LE, so I'd rather have the import anyway. |
