Why yes, let open up AIM and chat with my well-connected close personal friends at ADV, Geneon, Funimation, Viz, Bandai, Rightstuf, Media-Blasters, and CPM and see about this...oh, wait, it's Friday night, they must be all out drinking. Maybe some other random anime fan on this random anime message board knows something But seriously, watch the ANN front page and/or Anime on DVD for announcements--until the companies announce it, people won't know.
My personal speculation: First off, there are so many new series being produced and only so many licensing dollars available to R1 companies to license them. And, with the evil spectre of fansubs hanging over everything, the companies might be less willing to take risks. So, Suzuka might get licensed, or it might not. It does have several things going for it--it has a setup similar to Love Hina (which saw some success here), fanservice/cute girls (always a draw), and a fairly serious romance story with a sports angle to make the series a bit different from most of what's been released over here. Too bad the male lead is just as dumb if not dumber than the average anime male. Several cons over this summer will have licensing announcements, like A-Kon (6/9-6/11), Anime-Expo (7-1/7-4), and Otakon (sometime in mid August IIRC), so for now, we play the waiting game. Eh, the waiting game sucks, let's play Hungry Hungry Hippos. |

I agree with Zalis, you can only wait and see and keep looking on ANN's news page. Unless you decide to turn to the darkside and give in to the temptation of *******.

I rather liked the show as well, and would hope it gets licensed. However, starting this summer you can show your support here by purchasing Del Rey's licensed volumes of the Manga. From what I hear, the Manga is very good, and goes further than the series. I think it starts in August, so give it a shot!

It was recently found out that FUNimation owned the domain suzuka.tv and mushishi.tv. On top of sending a C&D letter to a fansite and including various unlicensed works such as Black Cat (Which they are going to announce soon) and Suzuka, the chances of it being announced at an upcoming convention are very, very high. (then again, FUNimation also bought Princeoftennis.tv, look where that got them?)

I've always considered Suzuka a very likely prospect. The show was not popular in Japan but it was a surprise hit in the fansub community. In other words the cost of a license should be fairly low yet the potential gains fairly high.

Agreed. If some of the shallower crap like Green Green, Sunabozu and Grenadier get licensed, I'd expect Suzuka to be high on the waiting list!
I hadn't heard the news about Funi getting the website - that's encouraging. They've actually got a pretty nice streak of snagging good shows going, with KGNE, Speed Grapher, FMA, and FMP: TSR. But then again, after finally licensing BECK, they'd have to really mess up bad for my opinion to waver now. Suzuka would only be another win for them! Dare I say they've passed ADV as the top indie (ie no backing from the "motherland") US licensor? Oh, I dare |

They may not have Japanese backing, but remember that they were recently purchased by the multi-media distributor Navarre Corporation. In the year ending March 31, 2005, they earned more than $90 million in gross profits, and ending March 31, 2006 more than $100 million. It is very likely that Navarre is providing Funimation with funding they might not otherwise have for the acquisition of new properties.
