Personally I think the most underappreciated anime that should be watched by all anime fans is The Place Promised in Our Early Days. This is by far one of the best anime movies ever made. Also some other anime that no one has really ever watched is S-Cry-Ed or Saber Marionette J. I recommend these anime for any looking for a new series to buy.

How about Dragon's Heaven. A short 80's anime movie by Youmex, who also did BGC. I thought it was good, but that's just me.

Um, sCRYed ran on Adult Swim for a year or more, so it's a pretty well-known and widely-watched title.

And Place Promised in Our Earlier Days is a title that most serious anime fans know about and have probably seen because it's the sophomore project by the guy who made the widely-respected Voices of a Distant Star. It's also in ANN's Top 50 on ratings (at #48 on the Bayesian chart) so I'd certainly say it's appreciated.

If you want titles that are underwatched for as good as they are, look at something like Princess Tutu, Koi Kaze, or Diamond Daydreams.

I agree with Key's not only that it's one of the most popular films when it was released in Japan. So under appreciated, certainly not. I felt that Place just wasn't as good as some other releases, also I don't think it was even as good as Voices of the distant star. I think that it defintely been seen by enough people

Compartively see Monster it's in the top 10 and yet not many more have seen it to that of "The place"

I am big Monster fan so that why I used it as a reference but there are plenty of series that derserve more credit and/or need more people to see it.
Till next time,

The problem with this thread IMO is that who's to say which anime's are under-appreciated or under-watched? I mean even the person who started this thread has no clue as to which are "under-appreciated", judging by the following posts. I just don't see how a topic like this can work.

Looking at the number of people ranking it (on ANN), the number of people who have seen it, and how highly rated it is, I would suggest Revolutionary Girl Utena as "underwatched", particularly given how long it has been available as an official release in North America (sorry, can only speak about what I know which is the NA release info, but given it aired on Unicable Mexico Broadcast, and has a wide-range of European companies listed, one can assume it's pretty far-reaching in its various releases). Haibane Renmei, an excellent but short and more recent anime, has been watched by many more people than the much longer Utena. Even Air, which is currently available in mostly fansub form to the people who frequent this website (yes, I know there are people with their Region 2s, but I haven't seen any non-Japanese companies listed on the page yet) has nearly as many viewers and people ranking it as a show that has been around much longer.

Of course, this is basing things on data found in the Encyclopedia, which I'm guessing a lot of people don't actually use to mark if they've seen an anime, etc (it took me a long time before I noticed the option), but still assuming those who use the Encyclopedia and those who don't are similarly stratified samples of the ANN population, on could possibly assume some semblance of 'truth' by comparing certain titles. Clearly a show that's on [adult swim] is going to have many more votes than a show that isn't, even if the non-[as] show has been around much longer (ie comparing the data from Fullmetal Alchemist to that of Utena simply isn't comparing apples to apples.)

Anyway, another show that is suprisingly underwatched is the original Bubblegum Crisis OVA. Now, I haven't finished the show just yet, and I'm not the biggest fan of it either (but, oh, how I love the music), but given that it's considered a classic anime, and one that is often cited as one of the launching pads/defining anime of the cyber punk genre, one would assume more than 294 viewers would have ranked it. Particularly given how many more have ranked Akira.

Thanks guys for reminding of a few series that I need to rate.

Of the 12 animes that have been listed here as being underwatched, I've watched 5 and at least heard of 3 more. For someone who is more of a videogame fan than an anime fan, that seems to say to me that some of you need to try a little harder in making your nominations.

Well for me an anime that would fall under "under appreciated" would be Honey and Clover. I completely loved the series but not many people seem to have watched it. I do know that there are alot of users on these forums who have watched the series but I still find that there are way more users who haven't seen this series which I highly recommend.

I'd have to go with Hunter X Hunter. That series is one of the best shonen anime ever, and yet it gets very little attention overall. Flame of Recca's in a similar boat, although the anime is not as good as the manga.

Do titles that haven't been licenced in the United States count as underwatched? I mean not everybody downloads fansubs so could it be underwatched because we don't have any means of watching the series.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about Hunter X Hunter and look to pick it up when released in the US. And I'm almost positive I'm not the only one.

Still, enough people download fansubs, to the point where the a popular "brand-shiny-new" fansub series like Mai Otome gets watched more (549 > 411) than something that's been out on DVD for years, like NieA_7 (which I would count as undervalued because it's comedy outside the norm with strange/memorable characters, also because it's from Yoshitoshi ABe, who was also associated with Serial Experiments: Lain, Haibane Renmei, and Texhnolyze). In general, the titles that are most undervalued/underwatched are slow-paced, drama/romance/slice-of-life series. That's just how I see it--mainstream/casual fans tend to look for the giant robot/ninja/samurai action series or the harem/fanservice series, while avoiding "boring" anime like Someday's Dreamers, Kokoro Library, Diamond Daydreams, Boys Be, or Piano. I haven't seen all of these, myself, so I can't give full comments, but these sorts of anime generally provide a good experience to those who can appreciate them.

i watched Captain Tsubasa. the best sport anime.
i think Captain Tsubasa is only underwatched in U.S., it's very popular in Asian and EU.
maybe people dont like soccer here that why it haven't been licenced.

Saint Seiya is another one that is not popular in U.S.

Gunsmith Cats.

One of my favorite anime. I never ever heard that someone was a fan of this series, or for that matter, the manga. Which is by the way, my favorite manga.
