No Flake!!! For Shame Answerman, for shame....
Anyways, a comment about the anime for girls shows, I would like to see fruit baskets on T.V (Probably on the new Funi block) pretty soon because the mangas did well on sales, and I wouldn't be surprised if it became big, mainstream wise. Although I agree we (anime fans) are in a niche market, I don't see anime shows on the rise, but I really do see manga kicking to the top, especially with the tweens and older teens market (Look at Naruto manga for example). Hopefully anime becomes mainstream in the next 10 years or so, because right now, general Americans are finally tuning into watching non-live action movies (At least more than before ) |

As a biologist, I know exactly how Dr. Jeffrey Wigand feel. First-hand experience. And I'm not talking about "elementary schools" or multi-billion conglomerates, but universities. Last edited by dormcat on Fri Mar 24, 2006 12:42 am; edited 2 times in total |

So where does the over-30 anime watchers that buy legitimate DVDs and never watched a fansub in his or her lifetime fall? Does this mean that these poeple aren't part of the "mainstream" anime culture? Does this mean that people over the age of 30 (like myself) that watch and buy anime legitimately (i.e. legally) are not legitimate anime fans? Sorry, Zac, but I don't understand what you are implying in your answer. |

How about shows that are geared more towards both sexes, like School Rumble or... um... I don't know, Full Metal Panic or something.... It would seem to make sense for shows like these to be played in popular programming blocks like Toonami or AS. Or am I wrong in thinking that those shows aren't written primarily for boys?

You know what 'generally' means, right? 'Cause I said that twice, before each basic generalization. |

Answerman, you forgot another reason why Disney redubbed Totoro: it is because Disney is the official licensor of Studio Ghibli films. Disney owns the licensing rights to Totoro now, not Fox. How could you forget that?!

So I'm not the only one who felt like he was wandering at K-Mart when he tried to sit through the Fanning sisters' performance.
The new Totoro's alright, if you like Megatron. |

Because that has virtually nothing to do with it? If Disney wanted to use the Fox dub, they very well could have, had they paid to include it on the DVD. |

Isn't that sort of implied in his answer? Anyway, as for the shojo on Adult Swim issue...I'd love to see it, although I have to agree with Mr. Bertschy that it's unlikely. The mention of FMP! makes me wonder, though...could a show that's a hybrid of action/romantic comedy like that help bridge the way for shojo to be more mainstream? Although Rurouni Kenshin sort of fits that catagory, and that didn't seem to help. |

Don't make Bee-Train angry, you wouldn't like Bee-Train when they're angry... Seriously thou, I haven't seen Tsubasa. So I don't know how the environment played out in that show. I know most of their work, and it pleases me; so.... Bee-Train SMASH! I'm going to bed now... |

Wait, so people are actually upset about the new Totoro dub?
Must be tough being a dub company: if you cut things out, people complain. If you redub something so things are no longer cut out, people complain. You can't win. |

I agree, the old dub was probably garbage, there no real reason for people to complain. but still, you cant make everyone happy.

I saw the first episode of TC awhile back, and I definitely recognized the musical style and standard Bee Train tricks. I was a bit puzzled...I saw action, I saw good drawings, I saw CLAMP characters that I knew...and yet I still found myself almost falling asleep, in true Bee Train Madlax tradition. Heck, I was midway through Card Captor Sakura at the time, and I loved that series and its main character. I hear it gets better later on, so I'll give it a shot someday. The generalizations in this column were on-target, but had plenty of CYA language...as a fansubber, fansub downloader, and young adult fan (who doesn't have enough HD space to DL *every* fansub possible ), I didn't feel offended. It's kind of a shame, the attitudes that people take toward fansub groups and licensed series. These days, people expect fansub groups to go against the law (more so than they already do) and against the fansub tradition of "stop when licensed" that was established back in the VHS gen-lock days, and then get all mad and disappointed when the upstanding, ethical groups actually do drop series (like Madlax, for instance, whose license was announced when all but the last episode had been subbed by 2 groups who then did not sub the last episode). Love the kittens, very cute...and if anybody feels like the Flake is lacking, it can't be that hard to write an intentionally flaky letter and get in there yourself. Don't just sit and complain, get invloved |

Is it even a problem? I'd like to direct you and Zac over to my ex-boyfriend, whom i got interested in the series. He LOVES it (can't wait for more), and all he's ever seen is Card Captors and Chobits. He was a little hesitant at first, because he told me he hasn't seen a lot of CLAMP. It was my mistake to say that it involved characters from other CLAMP stories in the first place. I simply explained to him he DIDN'T need to see those series to understand. The crossovers make it nice for us CLAMP fans, but the story isn't written so you know who the characters are. They're given new roles. |
