There are a number of (generally shonen) anime and manga conventions that I have been curious about, but haven't asked about because I've never wanted to seem like someone who only understood some cultural aspect through anime. I know that sort of thing is frowned upon, and I've never wished to appear in such a light. However, I thought that with that pretense it would be alright to ask some questions as well as invite others to do the same.

The first is the term Hokage; I've seen it used only sparingly outside of Flame of Recca and Naruto. Did it's use originate in Flame of Recca, or does it predate this? Indeed, there are numerous parallels I could draw between Flame of Recca and Naruto that makes me feel almost as though it were an influence on Masashi Kishimoto.

Speaking of those two series, I've noticed that numerous shonen hero types in series that deal with element attributes are connected to fire. Recca Hanabishi (Flame of Recca), Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto), Danma Kuso (Bakugan Battle Brawlers)...the list goes on. Is there a reason for this?

Thank you kindly; I'm sure more will come up in the future and I certainly hope that I don't look to be the sort of person I so fear as appearing to be.

I believe there are historical bases for many of the story elements in anime that revolve around fighting and warfare. The Hokage as far as I know refer to an actual group or groups that existed around the violent reformist periods in Japan. I'm not interested in history much so I tend to take some of the conventions and terms at face value and assume they had something loosely to do with historically significant events or people.

Hmm, interesting. I'm very much interested in history, but I haven't found anything on a real organization called the Hokage. I'll certainly keep looking; thank you very much.

Of course, some stories tell (relatively) accurate historical lessons, like Rurouni Kenshin and the like.
