Shounen is basically a genre meaning that the anime is meant to target young males. (At least i believe) Shounen meaning 'young man'. A good example would be the Naruto anime. Just as Shoujo is for 'young girl', which are generally romantic cuter animes. Shounen are more adventure, fighting anime.
A Fantasy genre is pretty broad I guess, but I would imagine it to be something like...unworldly or magical. I think 'Supernatural' is also 'unwordly' but to more an an extreme...and I think it would fit better with a horror aspect. Sci-fi I think could also be related to Fantasy, but would focus more on technology, robots, computers. Rather than something being magical, it would focus on things already in our world, but just highly more advanced. So I would assume fantasy to be something 'not of this world' but not something meant to be scary, but rather to be magical. While I can see some Sci-fi series being possible in the future, Fantasy genres probably won't be. This is just my interpretation. |

One thing on shounen series: not all shounen series are fighting/action like Naruto, Bleach, DBZ. Many do revolve around the theme of "solving problems via physical confrontation," but there are also many comedy/romance shows which I've seen mistaken for girl-targeted shows. As a guidline, if you see one guy + lots of girls + lots of fanservice with these girls (revealing outfits, big breasts, "accidental" situations where the guy falls on them, sees them undressing, etc.), then you're looking at a shounen romance/comedy show, sometimes also called "harem" shows. Under this category, you would find shows like Love Hina, Ichigo 100%, Chobits, Negima, Mahoromatic, Suzuka, and many others. Just remember that shounen=aimed to please guys, and you'll do okay.

I define the fantasy genre as some sort of situation that can't happen in real life such as magical or spiritually powered people or knights battling dragons, people flying without the aid of an airplane, that sort of thing. It's basically a catch-all genre that one would put unusual stories that don't seem to fit anywhere else.

I don't know how GiTS: Stand Alone Complex is classified with the shounen genre? |
