I can't speak for everyone on their viewing habits for anime, but when I first got into the game some time ago it was all on what Toonami had, or the Sci-fi Channel back when they had Saturday Anime. Hence most of what I saw was dubbed before I discovered subs. Well, very recently I was rewatching Gundam Wing when I noticed something....The dubbing does not hold up well at all!
Granted this is my opinion about it but still, it doesn't make the show terrible but I find myself needing to watch it in Japanese to continue it because of the poor quality it seems to have nowadays. I know Japanese having taken it for 3 years, and I can speak it well enough so I have no problem understanding some of what they say (I am a bit rusty I'll admit). I do watch anime subbed as well as dubbed, depending on what I'm watching. If I originally saw the show in English I tend to revert to that, as it's how I saw Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star and many others. And, while I enjoy the dubs for these shows they still hold up in my mind as decent. The question I'd like to know from you guys and gals is: What are the anime you find that when you watched them in English first they seemed fine, but on repeated viewings later they feel as if they don't hold up as well as they used to? |

I actually like the Gundam Wing dub, though that's mostly because I hate Quatre's Japanese voice (it's too obviously female, IMO). But I do recognize that it's maybe not the greatest in the world (I also know just enough Japanese to realize that the subtitles are, in fact, dubtitles and not strictly accurate translations of what's being said).
A similar case is the dub for Vision of Escaflowne. I recognize that it's really not that good. But I'm just too used to those voices to switch over, especially when I do prefer dubs since I'm free to do something other than sit and read the screen. |

In all my anime viewing, only one title deserves the Worst Dub Ever Done in Anime and that honor belongs to Green Green.
When I started watching the first episode, something was off. It's hard to explain, but it just didn't seem right. I managed to get past the first episode, but the second episode seemed to actually get worse. Then the third. By this time, I was about to quit, but decided to kill some time and swap the language track to Japanese. The series improved 100% (audibly) and I was to get through the rest of the series easily. It still didn't make up for the series itself, but it was at least tolerable. I discovered why the dub was so bad: background noise was removed. It's amazing how much sound is applied to the background and once it's gone, it's weird! At any rate, I don't consider bad dialogue as being a bad dub. When the actor doing the voice really dislikes the anime they're working on, it can be heard, and this can be as damaging as bad dialogue with good acting. |

I actually cared for the Gundam Wing dub myself, especially hearing David Kaye's Treize Khushrenada, so elegant sounding as Treize.
As for the topic at hand, the Zeta Gundam dub was the one whose dub didn't hold up well at all, I have no idea why Bandai handed over the job to Blue Water and not use the already established Ocean Studios, who had dubbed the first series and Char's Counterattack. Hearing different voice actors for reccurring characters like Char, Amuro, and Bright made me ask myself what the heck was Bandai thinking?! Even for some of the new characters, the voice acting felt bland. |

Pretty much everything I watched when I was younger. One example would be Digimon, the dub of which I got to re-experience while watching a recap of the series.

To reply to some previous posts, I still love the series of Gundam Wing as a whole despite what the voice acting may seem like. I'll admit that some of the voices are better than others but in retrospect I think that's part of it. Voices like Trieze and Zechs were on a different level that others (say Quatre's or the strange deepness that comes from Heero's voice despite him supposedly being a child). I think I should clarify that one of my main issues with the dubbing is that some of the acting felt forced or stilted in a few parts, some of Lady Un's dialogue comes to mind as well as the man who is seen shouting at the meeting with Trieze or Relina's father...I honestly forget who he was shouting at. So it's almost as if the voice doesn't fit the emotion or depth of emotion that should be conveyed.

I'm not usually too picky with dubs, but a few have irked me.
For starters, the recent Canaan dub is like...the very definition of "lifeless." They just grabbed a few random people, and have them read out lines into a mic. Not fun. The Tenjho Tenge dub, for weird reasons despite having a fairly solid cast, came out terrible. What the hell happened, I don't know, and don't care. The dub work for X TV was honestly really uneven. Some characters, like Fuuma and Subaru ended up with awesome voicework, while others like Sorata and Yuto made your ears bleed. That said, I can't think of too many others at the moment - I guess I had the pleasure (and luck) of mostly being exposed to damned good dub work. Also, off-topic, but Mr. Thorn..I gotta tell you... If I were to ever proclaim a comic book character to be a hero and role model of mine, the first that would come to mind is Spider Jerusalem.

I re-watched the dub for Vision of Escaflowne recently, and one line just made me twitch; "I hit you with the flat of my blade!" I don't know why, but something about the way the VA delivered it made it seem much more ridiculous than it should have, and its become a running gag amongst my anime friends.

Pretty much everything past maybe 10 years ago.
Claymore's dub was alright, but it definitely could have been better. Noein's dub was good for all the main characters (Yuri as Yuu could of been better though) except all the secondary characters were pretty bad. Jyu Oh Sei's dub for the main character was bad, young and older. Ghost Hunt's dub sucks, although that show kind of turned to crap anyways. Anything by 4kids sucks, with the exception of Ultimate Muscle and Pokemon (because it's so bad, it's good) D. Gray Man's dub is not that great either. Especially Kanda, Travis is an amazing voice actor, but he was not suited for that character AT ALL. Rurouni Kenshin's dub sucked as well. Would've liked to have seen a good dub for a series like that. Samurai 7 was a mix of good and bad. |

I would have to disagree with you on this one sir, as I quite enjoy the dob for the series and more often than not as it was the first way I saw it use the dub to watch it in. I can't tell you why I like it more than to say I just love the voices and characterization for the main characters. However that's just my opinion but I respect that you disagree. Apparently there are people that love the Gundam Wing dub more than I also, though I enjoy it I don't hold it as high as others, like you seem to do the same for the Kenshin dub. |

First of all, thank you for not going apesh!t about disagreeing with my personal opinion. The one voice I really really hated was Aoshi's voice. Actually, I liked the dub for the Sony dub's for the OVA's and Movie. I am one of those people who enjoyed the dub for Gundam Wing. Although, that could be because I was young when i watched the series, and just barely knew what anime was, haha. I can see why you would/wouldn't like the dub for it. |

Pretty much every ADV dub that isn't a comedy. Evangelion and Blue Seed's dubs reek of wooden voice acting, for instance and it's clear that most of Bubblegum Crisis 2040's cast is ill equipped.
Some Ocean dubs don't hold up quite as well, either. Gundam Wing's English dub isn't that pillar of power it used to be. Not that it's horrible now, but it's lost most of its luster. Obviously a lot of early Funimation dubs don't hold up well, either. Even some early Animaze stuff doesn't sound good anymore, like Macross Plus. Oh, and the Tenchi Muyo dub doesn't hold up well anymore, either.
Forget "doesn't hold up", it was never fine to begin with. |

The English Dub Hell Girl (Jigoku Shoujo, first season) was pretty good, except I didn't like the voice done for Ai Emna. It just didn't sound right to me, I was expecting a softer voice (maybe cutesy) for her. The voice had no emotion which fitted the character, but it just... I probably just dislike the voice for her. I liked every other character's voices though.
It's been a while since I've listened to the Gundam Wing english dub, but from what I remember, I enjoyed it. I actually enjoyed all the Gundam english dubs I've seen. I think I enjoyed most of the dubs I've watched, but I'll need to re-watch to see if my opinions have changed. *Goes to think about English Dubs series I've watched* |
