Blasting caps are notoriously sensitive. A thrown knife is more than enough to detonate such an initiating charge. Not coincidentally, the most-used emergency/police radio frequency has been directly implicated in more than a few explosions of caps.
Shooting down another's gun barrel could happen. Records of shootings IRL show untrained people reflexively shoot at the opponent's gun instead of center-of-mass. If the shot in question was taken deliberately, much like a hole-in-one the odds depend on the shooter. Beware the man with only one gun, he knows everything that gun can do!
Just explain to me how 90,000 TONS of carrier got stuck on a rock, now....

I love how everyone praises Castle of Cagliostro so much, but it really was a very poor Lupin III movie. A fantastic, beautiful anime movie (one of my favorites), but a poor Lupin III one, because none of the characters acted like themselves. Lupin was saint-like, Jigen didn't care about money, Fujiko was ultra tone-down (design-wise and personality wise, then compensated with violence), Goemon was superflous. The only person who was the same as the anime series was Inspector Zenigata.
I'd probably end up enjoying this one, directed by Monkey Punch, more as a Lupin movie.

Gotta love opinions. They are rarely correct.

Clearly not in this case. Castle of Cagliostro is a wonderful film indeed, but to call it a poor Lupin film is....off. Lupin isn't always some lecherous pervert and thief. Plenty of times in the series and assorted movies and specials he ultimately seeks to help those in need, sometimes forgetting about the treasure completely. Jigen isn't always some greedy money grubber either. Though he hates helping others, usually he'll begrudgingly go along with it if Lupin wants it or if it can mean some good fun. How was Goemon superflous? He was his usual silent bad-ass, and was annoyed when he had to waste his blade in pointless fights as usual. Fujiko was toned down it was true, but her character varies from movie to movie as it is.

But most of the time, he is, by Monkey's Punch's own description of him, even. Read the manga. Watch a good number of the TV episodes. Watch the first movie. The man is a jerk, and that's what makes him so fun to watch. He's a goofy, selfish prick, but brilliant at stealing. It's Lupin's thing.

It's true that Lupin has been helpful in ridding the world of greater threats than he, and has even helped those in need, but "forgetting about the treasure completely" is very rare. He's a thief, and usually he's thinking of how he can help those people in need AND still get the treasure. That's what CoC failed at. Lupin should've still found away to get those goat bill plates before Fujiko did.

Yes, you're right. However, Jigen just seemed to be okay with whatever Lupin was doing in Castle of Cagliostro. He didn't lodge a single real complaint over the fact that they're going through all this trouble not even for the goat bill plates, but for Clarisse. The man's heart isn't stone, but he's Jigen, and he still needs to get paid. Jigen's the kind of guy who will complain if the job doesn't pay. Lupin is the romantic, and will do a job out of the principal, but Jigen will usually complain about it, at least.

Likewise, even though Goemon is far from greedy, he would have been more vocal about taking part in a job with no pay-off. His role in the movie was pointless, because they could have done all this without him. His use of his blade was pointless in all the cases it was used, and he must've had but three lines of dialogue. He's the silent type, but at least he had more lines in the first movie.
Quote: | Fujiko was toned down it was true, but her character varies from movie to movie as it is. |
Fujiko from the first movie was the same Fujiko from the TV series, whereas Fujiko in the second movie could've been any random character that was invented for the movie.
The point is, CoC wasn't really a Lupin III movie. You could have replaced the cast of Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, Fujiko, and Zenigata, with generic characters, or invented new ones, and it probably would have stayed the same.
It's a lot more fun with the Lupin gang, though.

He probably assumed they were destroyed when they torched the place. I know I thought as much the first time I watched.
And I don't know that Lupin was completely going into it without thinking about the payoff. I point specifically to when he remarks to Clarisse at the end "this treasure is too big for my pocket". Though his main goal was to help Clarisse, I'm sure that if there was treasure to be had that he could steal, Lupin would have been after it.
