I think we are fast approaching the time when 12-episode anime titles are produced by typing in a few parameters into a computer somewhere, and out comes a completed anime in a few hours.

That's the impression I got slogging through Omamori Himari, particularly through the first four episodes.

They clicked all the check boxes to include the cat girl, the neighbor/childhood friend girl, the maid girl, the lofty girl, the loli girl and all the different kinds of girls. The frustrated horn-dog friend is there, but although is presence is minimal he does get clouted by offended females a few times. There is a sexy sensei but the screen time got so crowded you don't see her much.

On the cat-girl configuration dialog box we select "transfer student", "sword," and hidden-inner demon slider set to five (out of 6).

For the hero? Well just take all the defaults. Who cares.

Then, move the slider bar for "male fan service" up to about 8.5 (out of 10). Leave the "female fan service" at zero. Again who cares.

Bad guy characters. In the drop box pick ("Loli/Suit pair") but the software is an early revision so the only two options are "floating" and move that slider bar over all the way to the right, and "morph into demon" most of the way to the right. No other real attributes.

That's the whole show or you. If it weren't for the fan service I wouldn't have made it all the way through and the most interesting thing about it is what bits they chose to censor. (Nipples check box not selected btw).

Yeah, you pretty much nailed it on the head. But don't forget that the lolli-molesting box was also checked *shudders*...

(NSFW pic ahead) I think there was only one good thing in that show for me: this. Or is that technically four good things? Twisted Evil

And don't forget the last episode:
spoiler[Let's make up some B.S. reason why catgirl will have to leave the main character in a really pathetic attempt to add some emotional depth at the last minute] only then to spoiler[immediately take away that B.S. reason to make way for the harem-ending.] Rolling Eyes ^10

But, I guess I can't complain too much, since it was obvious where this show was "heading" from ep 1...

Eh, shows like this are easy to bash, so people do. I found it a reasonably entertaining show. Nothing especially memorable, but an okay diversion for 20-oddish minutes a week. I seem to be able to watch these type of unoriginal shows without getting all bent out of shape over them. A useful talent - sort of like being a cheap drunk. Still think my name for the show: Omammaries Himari is tewwibly, tewwibly clever...

Count me in as in agreement with Blood- on this issue. I don't see a reason to go around bashing things I don't like. I did happen to like this though I'd say it was not the greatest thing out there by any stretch.

I do get both of your points and I think there is probably some value to people who might want to watch these shows to see the negative commentary, but I don't really see a reason to make a new thread on it.

I liked the character designs in this show, and AFAIK you can't fully automate that. I suppose they might be derivative but to me they were unique enough.

There are a couple very good reasons to continue watching a piece of crap ecchi show you know is crap. You can fool yourself all you want but the reason isn't that the story "isn't so bad"- It mostly has too do with your tolerances.

One very big the reason is that it's your kind of ecchi. You like the designs of the girls so you watch. You're a pervert and they hit your button --not that there's anything wrong with that. Hey- I watched all of KissXsis, Blood- has it in his "will not finish" list. Why did I finish that show full of shallow stereotypes and an equally bland and pathetic male lead and he didn't? One is the designs of the main girls- petite girls with small breasts and pinchable cheeks- I love em- Blood- likes the big boobies of which Omamori Himari really focuses on- while marginalizing the more petite girls--- except for the complete loli- who was more disturbing than erotic.

Then there's the focus of the ecchi show. I have a low tolerance for bad ecchi "action" shows but a high tolerance for bad slice-of-life. Others like Blood- have the opposite reaction.

In the middle was a master of testing the limits of bad ecchi, Demon King Daimao. Bad ecchi action, bad ecchi slice of life, but I tolerated it for the silly slice of life and cute petite girls and others stayed for the buxom girls and "action"

The only other saving grace to keep you watching would be sense of humor, but for that to work the humor ends up being the foremost quality of the show.

I wanted to like Omamori Himari , I like harem shows, fan service is good and I tend to overlook a hell of a lot in support of such shows but Omamori Himari was simply not my thing. So I bash it. I watched most of it though- I started fast-forwarding during the western witch's arc and skipped the rest when the demon plot really got tiresome

Well, I enjoyed it, it got a Very Good from me. Yes there is a formula for harem shows just like every other genre, so what? If you like it you like it, if you don't you don't. Needs another season though, which is my one and only complaint. Himari was one of my favorite characters from last year.

Hey, I wouldn't have watched the whole thing if I was getting bent out of shape over it. I've gotten over my 'plow through everything even if I hate it' phase years ago. I can think of worse, believe me, but this show really is impressively generic. You should know by now I like many a dumb fanservicey titles Wink

Omamori Himari and Demon King Daimou were both fine for what they were. Having things like proper plots, settings, and character development would do nothing but get in the way of my fan service. Back off my lolis, catgirls, and tops being ripped off in battle fool.

This topic actually comes at an ironic time considering I have an Omamori Himari desktop this week and just bought the first volume of the manga tonight. Razz

The trap is you think it might get better so you keep watching for that.

In this case it actually got better -- a little -- after episode three. And that little bit better then convinces you -- hey maybe they will make something worthwhile out of this after all. You don't want to write off the time you spent so far, so keep watching. About episode 10 you realize there ain't a gonna be any there there, but there are only two episodes left so you might as well finish it.

Game over.

If I had to write something nice (alternative being shut up) about Omamori Himari I would say Yūto turned out to be the most realistic character. Of course most of the time he has to grimace and wince and act like he is being tortured when he happens to come into contact with Himari's breasts (or something similar) but there were times that they manage to move past that and say something to each other that a real person might say. He almost manages to take her aggressive nudity in stride.

One other thing that was a bit of surprise. Did anyone else catch that each episode's opening credits were different by a few frames? It happens when he is "caught in bed" by Rinko in some compromising situation. Each edition has him in a pose with different partners. But her reaction is back to the stock footage. Of course. Anyway somebody somewhere put a little extra effort in to it.

Personally I thought the anime was ok but i prefer the manga over the anime. there is just more of an overall story progression I mean in the anime yuto basically has no control over his power. But in the manga yuto does get some basic control of his power even if it's just a little.

I personally thought the series was a bit interesting. I'll admit, I wouldn't mind a season 2. I'd pick it up if they released a domestic box set (since that seems to be the only way you can get most anime titles these days). The idea of the demon tea-cup was a bit odd, yet neat, IMO. This series actually helped fill up my time back in November/December when I got really sick. Flipped my bed around, set mouse in a chair, marathoned the entire series over at Crunchyroll in a day. Lol. But alas, I agree with timesteel, the manga is a better.
