I had a really good experience this thanksgiving. I saw my brother for the first time in about two years we were sitting around awkwardly in my living room not knowing what to talk about. I was flipping through my collection of movies and shows and he sees FLCL and asked about it, so I throw it on. Of course, he loves it, and now that we have something to talk about all the awkwardness is gone and it is like we saw each-other last week. Not only did it improve my relationship with my brother but actually made me love FLCL a lot more.
I am feeling all sentimental now, if anyone has a story similar where anime has brought you and a friend, or a family member, or a lover closer together share it! Really, any story anime related that warms the cockles of the heart would be nice

Cue the crowd's simultaneous "Aaawww......"
Well, this one isn't actually something that has brought me closer together to the person in the story since we were already mega-close and still are, but I have a half-sister that's totally in tune with environmentalist stuff, right? So, a few years back, I showed her my Princess Mononoke DVD(she had always watched Kiki's Delivery Service when she was younger, so she wanted to see other stuff from Hayao Miyazaki) and after watching it, not only did she love the hell out of it, but we got into this epic discussion about how destructive we humans are to this earth of ours. Good times--she was over just last week for Thanksgiving and kept on asking over and over, "Dude, let's watch Princess Mononoke again!" but we unfortunately never got around to it(she had it on Netflix for a few months after I showed it to her the first time, but that was years ago). I'll make it up to her next time she comes by.
Besides that, I plan on showing her my Now and Then, Here and There DVD(coincidentally, these two are my favorite anime) the next time she comes by--she hates war with a passion, and I think something like that would really resonate with her.
And on another note about that same sister, we've watched Monster on Ani-Mondays since the beginning(haven't watched an episode without her) and we still have the last 5 eps saved on my DVR, so we gotta finish that up sometime as well. She loves that series just as much as I do.
Nice topic, btw.

That's good to here you had a bonding moment with your brother during the holidays. There was one time I watched Akira with an old friend and really had a good time. When I was young I watched the film like 3 times stoned and just couldn't understand the movie at all. Well about two years ago I decided to watch Akira gain and I even remember what my friend said when he recommended that we watch the movie. He was like "We should watch Akira!" And I said "Nah I've seen it like three times, I don't want to watch it again." Then he replied "Well maybe we might pick up on something from the movie we missed before..." LOL, he was so right cause after we watched it we just sat there in awe at how ******* amazing the movie is. After that I completely understood the entire movie for what it was and had a new found respect for good Anime after that night.
Basically I had a really good time with my friend watching this Anime and we spent a few hours afterwords discussing the plot and philosophy about various topics.
On the contrary I also remember one night me and the same friend from before had a little get together with some friends and the night was starting to wind down. We were all drinking and were starting to pass out so we put in a movie to calm the mood and he decided to play Akira. Keep in mind there was like 3 guys including us and about 8 Russian girls and I remember saying to him "Maybe this isn't quite the movie for the atmosphere..." He said "Ah don't worry about it Russian girls are really smart and intellectual, they will dig it." Needless to say they were mocking the movie the entire time and we had to shut it off about half way through.
Akira for me isn't just a movie but a small part of my life. Every time I think of it I can't help but to reminisce on all the personal memories it reminds me of. This movie has also made a significant impact within me, I can say without a doubt it provokes one to really think hard about ourselves and the future of humanity.
