Are there close family ties between Madman and Tokyopop? I was just looking at the Madman catalog and noticed that some of their titles have TP cover illustrations with TP branding.

I thought Madman was an independant publisher but now I wonder if they publish under license to TP or are an agent for TP in Australia. Their release dates seem to follow TP's by several months, for instance they released Tsukuyomi Moon Phase volume 12 on October 1. If I remember correctly TP released it in late 2009.

It would seem that there is some kind of connection. Perhaps someone could shed some light on it?

Madman's a licensor and distributor, so if they're just distributing Tokyopop titles, then that's why it'd still have their logo. However, if Madman has licensed it for themselves to release, then it'll have the Madman logo.

Think of it like Funimation and Geneon. The shows that Funimation themselves don't own like Fate/Stay Night and Shakugan no Shana still have the Geneon logo, even though they're the ones releasing it.

For some reason I was thinking that Madman had its own licenses for these titles. In other words, TP had a license for publishing and distribution in North America and Madman had a separate license for publishing and distribution in Australia/Asia. Instead, while that may be true for some titles, for others they serve as a distribution agent for TP. Is that about right?

This would mean that titles TP abandons in North America would also be abandoned Down Under, giving them the opportunity to piss off their customers on two continents. Awesome.

I think it's more like Madman sub-licensed from Tokyopop to distribute those titles in AU, so they didn't really license it themselves straight from Japan. Either way, though, I think you have the gist of it.
