In what crazy warped reasoning, did someone decide to make porn-peddler Danny Choo the opening mic guy at Anime Expo?!

Danny Choo is just some expatriate weirdo who tries to promote Akihabara -- the Red Light District of Tokyo when it comes to Maid Cafes, essentially -- and aggressively calls up news agencies like CNN and BBC that don't know any better, that he is in fact NOT a "popular internet phenomenon"

In fact, I'd never even *HEARD* of Danny Choo until it was reported that he was the opening act at Anime Expo a few weeks back, and I looked him up.

This fanboy played you all like fools.

Well, it was a little vitriolic, but it's still a somewhat valid question. Choo is little more than a curiosity and I don't quite understand why he was given such high billing.

Also, did Nakajima really leave AX completely in the lurch? Holy crap, I can only imagine how angry certain folks involved (including May'n) must be. That gig's been planned for months, and I know a lot of people came this year to see them together.

Nono, they meant that Nakajima and a few other guests couldn't attend Opening Ceremonies. She definitely performed at the concert with May'n. I was there. Smile

Also just because Danny Choo came out early doesn't necessarily mean he was given highest billing. It was a good idea to get the crowd going with his Stormtrooper routine. He was also a reaaaally nice guy.

Try reading his Danny Choo's blog. It's quite interesting and you learn a lot about japan from him. Not a bad guy at all.

That's one way of looking at a very small aspect of what Akihabara is, yes. Akihabara is a big place for geeks and otaku of all types, not just horny ones. Anyone at GAINAX (and most likely Khara) will speak positively of it. At Fanime 2007 Asami Sanada called it the place you need to visit most if you visit Japan.

By the way, did you know that Evangelion is directly responsible for Akihabara being what it is today?

Relevant section, originally from Mainichi Daily News' interview with Otsuki:

Quote:
The other transformation Evangelion brought about was changing the face of (the central Tokyo district of) Akihabara.

Up until then, Akihabara had only been a place where people bought household appliances and electronics, but anime gradually began to make its presence felt more and more.

At the time, people could only buy either laser discs or video cassettes, but we still managed to change Akihabara so that it became a place that went from selling appliances to selling software.
