I think it is stupid to read comments over a video I want to watch... and now I have to take it on dvds... stupid ideas abound.

Who said you had to?
I have two of the DVDs in question.. but I can't read most of the comments (certainly not quickly enough)
One thing I noticed the last time I was on niconico was comments on coverart for Amazon links :p

It's the same thing as MST3K'ing with your friends, just over the internet.

I'm assuming it's like subtitles, you can turn them on/off when you please. It's an okay idea, I guess. Leave it to Japan to come up with something like this.

sounds kind of... stupid. anyone that has the time to do something so pointless would just watch it with their friends anyway.

I wonder how long it will be until some fansubber uses this to
create soft fansubs for Japanese DVDs...
Hmm, just noticed that MPC will let me load an external .ass
file to overlay over a DVD, so the only thing new listed in this article
is that the text file is loaded/streamed from a website where multiple people
can edit it.
