Nico Nico Douga Launches DVD Commenting Service
posted on by Egan Loo
Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: Nico Nico Douga, the Japanese streaming website famous for letting its users superimpose comments directly onto web videos for other viewers to read, is extending that same commenting feature to regular DVDs on Monday. The new Nico Nico DVD service will let DVD owners write comments to superimpose onto a DVD's video through a software player installed on Microsoft Windows. Other users with the same DVD and software player can view those comments and add their own.
There are currently 9 Japanese anime DVD titles which have comments enabled:
- Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
- The Sky Crawlers
- Evangelion 1.01: You Are (Not) Alone (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Jo)
- Lucky Star episodes 1-2
- The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
- Mobile Suit Gundam episodes 1-3
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya episodes 1-2
- Howl's Moving Castle
- Princess Mononoke
The Lucky Star in Budōkan: Anata no Tame Dakara concert DVD, the Hisaishi Joe in Budōkan ~Miyazaki Anime to Tomo ni Arunda 25-nenkan concert DVD, and Aya Hirano's I Love You DVD are also available in the Nico Nico DVD service, as are dozens of Japanese special effects titles, Western and Japanese movies, variety programs, and other genres.
Nico Nico Douga has been previewing an English version of its website with live streams of the Space Shuttle Atlantis launch on November 16 and last week's CES 2010 convention.
