The rather distinctive style of this book derives from the style originally introduced in Mangajin Magazine's Basic Japanese Through Comics series. Wayne Lammers was Translation Editor of Mangajin magazine, from 1991-1997. He seems to have refined the style somewhat, as you can see by comparing the sample pages of the two.
I can't comment positively or negatively on this new work, as I haven't read it - but I own the Mangajin books, and I'm extremely fond of them. - abunai |

It feels like a gimmick to me. The latest craze for a couple of thousand people to buy it, yet only a handful actually invest the time necessary to make it worthwhile...

Well, that's the story with most language resources. One must devote oneself to learning a language.
But, I did enjoy the Mangajin books and now that I'm actually studying the language, they're quite fascinating reads. I can't say one way or another how much of an aid these books will be for beginners(as I obviously haven't read it either), but if they are truly similar to the Mangajin books, I'm sure they'll provide a interesting resource for beginners(at least better than picking up words from anime  ).

Lammers isn't just anybody - he knows his material well. I like the Mangajin books (and I'll probably buy and like this one, too) because they delve into details. They're not intended to teach you the language if you don't know it, but to explain details of the language and culture to people who have already made some progress in learning the language.
For instance, both volumes of the Mangajin series explain a lot of body language (e.g. batsu and maru) and slang, as well as clarifying some popular puns that have become clichés of the language, to the extent that everybody uses them. They also touch on some of the more tricky words (e.g. kondo). I recommend this kind of book for someone who has already had at least half a year's worth of Japanese classes, not for a beginner. - abunai |

Agreed. Not for beginners. Beginners need lots of phonic training first.
