i am(and have been for years) in the process of building a solid collection. however there have been times an uninformed attempt to find something new has resulted in the purchase of a real piece of cr*p. i have recently discovered a coupla places that sell imports with japanese only audio and english, chinese subtitles.(i have come to prefer the original product) the problem is there are so many titles i don't know, that i am leary of wasting money on a pricey waste of time. the question is: does anyone know of a list of the best? recent movies and tv series. my standards are simple; good writing and great art combined. some examples i already own are, last exile, anything by ghibli, full metal alchemist, read or die, naruto....get my drift? can't wait to see steamboy!! any help would be appreciated. thanks c dan the man, are you out there??

First off, these seriously sound like bootlegs. What region are they? And about how much do they cost and how many discs are there per series? If they are bootlegs, I implore you to stop purchasing them and seek out the legitimate R1 or R2 product. |

I think there are several sites with a top 50 anime list somewhere (can't remember), and I could've sworn either Anime Insider or Animerica had a "best of" list a couple issues ago, too. But, why not look right here on ANN?
![]() animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/ratings-anime.php Of course, no matter where you look, the rankings are going to vary somewhat. But, for the most part...usually the same anime end up compiling the top "5-10" titles of any list. And like Nagisa said, it sounds like you've stumbled upon a bounty of bootlegs. Read this thread to learn how to tell what's a bootleg and what's not. |

thanks for the links... i read it up and the quality and packaging are top notch on the ones i have already purchased.. i was at first wondering if they were legit also; i think they are. most of the writing on the packaging is japanese so it is of liittle use to me to determine if they are the real deal.

They really sound like bootlegs. You shouldn't but them. Full Metal Alchemist and Naruto with english subs?
![]() Really, take another look at the Anime Digital pirate FAQ. |

Are they full 26 episode series on three discs in a box set? You should check out this thread. |

yes they are; last exile is 26 episodes and fma is 24...i intend to investigate these questions more. i can tell you that one store i go to is japantown video here in San Francisco. it is a very respectable business owned and operated by japanese. the discs are dvd's and are of the best quality. that goes for the packaging also...i suppose it is possible you guys are right about this. how do i determine the region??.....the original question still stands. anyone got titles of recent tv or movie releases that i might enjoy? i feel strongly that the artists that create these beautiful animations should be rewarded and supported for their efforts, and i do not, and would not ever intentionally buy bootlegs...

Aesthetically bootleggers want you to think you're buying a legit product when you're not. Looks can be very deceiving which is why so many people unsuspectingly fall into bootlegs.
Usually found on the lower back of the package (and sometimes the discs themselves). It's often shown as a circle or a globe with a number in the middle or simply the words "region" with a number. If you see the number 0 or the word ALL there's a good chance that it's a bootleg (but not a completely foolproof method as there are some legit region 0 discs out there). The best thing to do is list any manufacturer marks you see on the package, then we'll know for sure. Emerje |

Best of video qaulity? Could just be an R1rip. Best of packaging, you do know that HK booleg make look professional to decieve? If it has chinese subtitle, than it's a boot. |

Bootlegs are now equivalent to legitimate releases in quality. I've seen 'em myself. A friend of mine -- a good, knowledgeable anime and film fan -- got a bootleg of Gundam Wing and didn't realize it until I pointed out a few tell-tale signs (only five discs, region 0). Some bootlegs now include the English dub, for heaven's sake.
I can count on one hand the number of anime released in Japan that can be played on an American DVD player or have English subtitles (Animation Runner Kuromi 2 is the only DVD I know of that satisfies both conditions, and only a few others satisfy one condition.) |

Not always. Legit Chinese DVDs have Chinese subtitles too. Emerje |

Boots. These shows are never officially released on that few discs. For a 26 episode show you'd have at least four discs, as with Blue Seed. |

Examples of legitimate Region 0 titles are those released by Central Park Media / U.S. Manga Corps, such as Now and Then, Here and There (I have the boxset, which is also one of the best anime I've ever seen).
Darkhunter, consider yourself lucky that Emerje replied before I did. ![]() |

Cookzilla, look for a web address printed on the DVDs themselves. And look for the name of the company that produced the discs. Usually some Taiwanese or Hong Kong company. The ones you bought are most likely direct imports from Taiwan or Hong Kong. Bootlegs.

This screams bootlegs. Last Exile still has a couple more DVD's to be released before its finished (7 DVD's total I believe) and FMA won't be released until the beginning of the year. How many DVD's are in each of these boxsets you bought? |
