The prereg line for bitching and moaning starts here? Expect a long wait.
As an ex con volunteer, I can attest that when conventions get that big it's a necessity to cap attendence (unless one moves to bigger quarters), and I'm surprised they still refunded as it is...

I guess they decided to let one of the AX organizers make the rules this year.

At first I was worried about the 22,000 membership limit. Last year Otakon was the largest convention in North America and came in at 17,338 attendees. I'm a bit concerned about the people that will get a membership and be unable to attend, but the 22,000 membership cap is still 5,000 larger than last year's number. That would be a lot of people wasting money.

I was there last year and the lines were, indeed, ridiculously long, but this wont do much to stop that. On the contrary, I think more people are gunna go for pre-reg, regardless of no refund, and now that line that was so conveniently short for me last year will stretch the entire Inner Harbor. No matter, I think im gunna pre-reg quite soon anyway...

The only thing I'm mad about is them no longer offering one day memberships. I can't afford staying in a hotel and going all 3 days. Now, I would've a little ok with it since this is my last year of high school and all my friends are separating, but now that it's starting later, I don't know if any of them will even be here then!

Why have many summer conventions started doing this? Now I can never go because school starts around that weekend. Dammit.

Yeah, but AX hasn't imposed no one day memberships, and has not imposed Attendance Caps yet!

Well i easily understand about the attendance cap.I mean you can not keep growing and growing without hitting the roofs.I mean there is not to many places that can hold such a large crowd and what not.Myabe they can work on getting professionals to do the sound and lighting for the con.But my suggestion is that what happens if a person has an emergency of some sort that prevents them from attenidng the con. That person shouldn't be punished by not able to get a refund for something that is not their fault. They need to change that rule back.

Most likely, if there is a true emergency, a refund will be issued. However, the "I changed my mind" refunds won't be issued any more.

Otakon isn't going to hit the attendance cap. That'd be a HUGE amount of growth, on TOP of those who can to see L'Arc last year. They'd need to bring in some serious star power to draw them in like that. Maybe Shirow, maybe Toriyama, AND a serious J-Pop contender like Hikaru Utada or something, and none of that is likely.
As for the three day thing, the three day price isn't that much more than the one day price that you couldn't get it and then only stay for one day.

I wouldn't be surprised if they hit the cap in the next couple of years. With the amount of publicity, mixed with the increasing popularity of anime/manga/jpop, it's sure to factor in large growth, as has been the trend as of recent years.
But the long pre-reg lines can be easily eliminated with as simple a thing as gofering. Fork over a few hours of con-fun.

No, we decided this all on our own, for the reasons indicated. We've grown by at least 20% a year for the last 12 years. We had to put the brakes on before the city or the BCC did it for us.

Umm....your numbers are off. 17,338 was in 2003. Last year we were just shy of 21,000 -- see the website.

Assuming, like most 1-day registrants, you go on Saturday, if you pre-register early enough the cost will be about the same. (Last year, earliest pre-reg was either the same price as Saturday or within $5.)

In most industries, if you miss something where you reseved a seat, you can't get a refund. It's your responsability to make sure you get there.
This is especially true in the case of limited attendance events such as Otakon. The ticket they sold you may mean that one other person couldn't attend.
Its not like you'll get a refund from an airline if you miss your departure.
