I'm a big rock and heavy metal guy myself yes, however I listen to many other genres of music as well such as techno/trance, classical/instrumental, Jazz, and of course various forms of anime music.

As far as most used I'd say most anime tend to use original orchestrated scores or a variety of different types depending on what's going on.

The first genre of music that comes to mind when thinking anime is J-pop. A great majority of the openings and endings are composed in this style, and you'll hear it just about every episode.

Instrumentally speaking, I'd say half the shows are orchestrated (including live recorded music in studios) and half synthesized. If not strictly one, then a combination of the two since it saves a little money.

Most anime scores (based on my viewings) tend to be of the orchestra instrumental variety or "classical" sounding if you want to call it that, though educated musicians and students of music history would hate for you use that label. When I say "orchestra," though, I'm referring to orchestral instruments, such as violins, cellos, flutes, kettle drums, etc. Some prime examples would be Escaflowne, Evangelion, or X (TV).

A few are also what I like to call "band music shows," not as in a marching band, but a group of instrumentalists and/or singers with a more modern sound like with guitars, drums, and so on. Examples include Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, or Hellsing.

I'm a fan of all sorts of music (anime and non-anime, though the only genre of music I can't stand for some reason is U.S. country music..). I could go on, but I'm not feeling well right now, so there...

The "band music shows"....those are really "jam-bands" most related to Dave Mathews Band.

I do notice, like Kruszer and Tony K said, alot of anime are orchestrated...

Was DBZ/GT; the dubed version; a "music over" theme songs?

Yes. FUNimation thought it'd be nice to get more attention from U.S. children by dubbing over the original Japanese music with their synthesized heavy metal/techno garbage, or whatever you want to call it. I personally don't have anything against that kind of music, but I find it especially unnerving for anime companies to do this sometimes, as it detracts from originality and continuity.

I find it annoying too, that companys dub over the songs, but for some reason i like to hear the riffs in DBZ intro and GT ending.

So far I haven't noticed anything dramatically different in anime soundtracks that's different from any other type of soundtrack. Orchestral scores (either acoustic instruments or synths (used due to budget sometimes - and others because that's the sound they wanted...) have been common in a number of anime I've watched - as well as rock, jazz, lounge, techno - it's all been in there - but that's all in everything else as well. The only thing really 'different' for me is the j-pop songs typically in the opening/closing - but there again - that's just pop music in Japan, pop music in the US is common in US shows. Etc...

A few that have hit strongly - the music in Ghost in the Shell (the first movie) - there are some scenes just showing the cityscapes - no characters, no dialog - and the music and mood is perfect throughout that. Generally more orchestral. Akira also has some great music moments.

I'm watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex as the dvd's roll out in the states - and the music for that is generally exceptional. Opening track by Origa is great (my wife loves it - wants the soundtrack) - and I like the mixing of languages in it and the tune in general. Much of the music is more electronic oriented - but lots of exceptions to that.

Noir has great music - it fits the show very well and is fairly unconventional bringing accordian, etc... I also thought Lain had some great musical moments - a bit of techno here and there, etc...

Anyway - I'm rambling.
