Manga buying habits: pick-and-choose or hardcore fandom?

So here's a question that came up among the comics community at large ... When buying manga, do you prefer to get lots of different titles, and try them out to see which ones you like, or do you follow just a few series closely and buy each volume as it comes out? Also ... is there any particular trend as to whether boys or girls follow each of these habits?
