Quote: | If you saw the drawing in question prior to viewing this episode, odds are you guessed the big twist early on. However, you're still likely to second-guess yourself at several points throughout the proceedings. |
YES. As soon as I saw Sukea's mole, I knew the score - but even taking the possibility of shadow clones into account, I frequently found myself questioning my initial assumption. Still, if Sukea hadn't been Kakashi, there would have been no point in Sakura scoffing at Naruto's barrage of questions. Interesting to see him portrayed as the smartest member of the group for a change. Getting a different voice actor for Sukea was also a clever way to throw the audience off.
Quote: | Had this been set in the post-chunin exams timeline, all of these plot holes would be nonexistent. (Seriously, just make Sakura's hair shorter.) |
This bugged me, too. Since this took place before the exams (heck, it was pre-Zabuza), Team 7 shouldn't have been so chummy with Team 8 and Team Asuma. Also, the group's first encounter with Lee didn't take place until the first day of the exams. However, he fled the scene just as quickly as he appeared, so I suppose it's possible Naruto and company simply forgot about him.
I was fine with them skipping the segue, too, even though they could probably pull off a fairly organic one for this story.
Kakashi: Look at those three, fighting together towards a common goal. It reminds me of the time they tried to unmask me. ... No, not that time - a different one. Trust me, you haven't seen it.

Years ago, I found this picture.
I was using this as a substitute until I could see Kakashi's real face. Now I can replace it with :

Last I checked, this entire episode was adapted from an extra manga Kishimoto whipped up last year, but only penciled. I forget what it was for, though. Am I remembering wrong?
There was also a story about Kiba and Akamaru from right after The Last.

Kakashi seems like a fairly practical kind of guy, whose only real indulgence is his reading material. So I have to wonder why he has an eye chart in his bathroom. Is he worried about losing his vision from the Sharingan? Or just in general because then he couldn't read?

Even though I've already seen his face 2 years ago in that manga extra, I still lost my s**t finally seeing it in the anime

Quote: | Unfortunately, as is often the case with this series, the action becomes bogged down by needlessly complex techniques, bizarre feints, and confusing strategies on both sides. Even though many of these elements are explained in meticulous detail, they still come off as confusing. |
Glad I'm not the only one who has a problem with this! On the plus side, this battle is about ten times easier to follow in the anime than in the manga. (Although I suppose the same can be said for most battle-oriented anime/manga.)
Quote: | Having read the manga, I'm aware of how this fight plays out, but I'm still eager to see the rest of it in animated form—and barring another unforeseen smattering of filler, we may be seeing it very soon. |
Right? They could easily wrap up this fight with two more episodes, but I'm sure they'll find a way to draw it out. I'm strangely hopeful that they'll hold off on more filler until this battle is over, though I honestly have no reason to be. Also, with the announcement that the show is continuing through winter, there's no way we're not getting filler between this fight and the next one.

I noticed they've been merging chapters to become one episode.
So I did some number churning and if my guess is more or less on the right track, Naruto should end in about 7 weeks. Give or take.
14 chapters to go.
2 chapters per-episode.
Maybe 7 more weeks.

Episode 470
Quote: | While Sakura's evolution from “token female” to “powerful shinobi” is among the series' best character arcs, I can't help but feel that it's completely run its course by this point. Whether it's canon manga material, anime-original filler, or feature film, almost every story involving Sakura makes a point of wedging in this theme. |
Even so, she still only acts as support for the main duo (and every other character she interacts with). Being a medical ninja and a fountain of chakra is pretty much her only attribute now, well, that and her rocket punch which she rarely uses, and honestly, isn't any more powerful than ordinary tsunderes found everywhere. Still, at least she's no longer cringing in a corner doing nothing, so that's an improvement.
What was confusing about these fights? They seemed pretty straightforward to me. I just couldn't figure out why it took them so long to realize the real Naruto has black orbs floating around him. That's not something easily overlooked.
My only real question was about Sasuke leaping dimensions. Does his power require swapping locations with something instead of just jumping short range?

The episode itself was pretty good (SasuSaku fans were over the moon for obvious reasons ). That aside, I'm keeping my happiness at the story returning to the main fight at a minimum this time. The last time I thought we were out of the woods (Taylor Swift pun intended) we get a backstory on Hagoromo and his sons (which weren't bad at all). So yeah.

Yeah, don't you just hate it when an anime keeps reminding us of something that happened by constantly showing the same chips over and over???

Not so much as swapping as it really shifting from one place to the next(the distances vary). Sasuke with his tomoe rinnegan can do this much for himself(which the limits of his ability he is gradually understanding so far from his battle with 10 tail host madara to presently Kaguya); but Kaguya rinnegan can alter nature itself and dimensions.

This week's cold open contained a great piece of unintentional comedy. Not even Hagoromo can keep up with how needlessly convoluted things have become.

The reason I asked was it seemed like he swapped places with Sakura's acid-damaged combat vest. If he's just shifting from A to B, why did they show that?
Episode 471
Yeah, I got a good laugh out of Hagoromo's dialog too.
"Well this lower half is Madara, Ten-Tails and Hashirama. ...No wait, it's Madara, Nine-Tails and Hashirama. ...Uh, forget about Madara, and Hashirama, it's just Nine-Tails and my sons! Yeah, that's the ticket."
"So what about the upper half?"
" ... ... I...guess that would be me... No, Nine-Tails and my sons...and me? Wait, I'm Nine-Tails and my sons? That can't be right. Never mind, I have a plan so shut up and do as you're told."
At least it was something to ponder during the Obito: End of Days arc. One thing that occurred to me this round - goofy knucklehead or bad-boy savant, why do the Uchiha always get the girl?

So obito finally bit the dust? Would I be in the wrong if I said good riddance? I'm sorry but I really hated him. From his weak motivation, to him constantly trying to make Naruto fall into darkness and despair (better than you have tried and failed, Obito). I know he tried to make up for it in the end, but he can never fix the sins he's committed, nor the deaths he's caused. Him and Danzo are two characters that can never have redemption, in my eyes.

Never have I wished a character would die as much as Obito. And not in a "You evil bastard" way. Just go already dude. Damn, he has to be the character the anime writers most like, even more than Tenten. Why they thought showing his backstory 38.6 quadrillion times would make his death dramatically effective is utterly amazing. And we get even more Obito next week. Yay...
