Let’s be honest about the probable length of the live-action movie compared to the actual anime, which consists of 26 episodes and two movies, and one of those movies is just a very good compilation episode followed by the first half of the second movie. Now, some episodes, though they build upon the character development, are completely unnecessary, especially when that character development can be expressed more simply in other ways. (An example of this: episode 3, spoiler[where Shinji gets depressed and runs away from NERV, then comes back, basically wasting an episode.]) These episodes don’t need to be in a live-action movie. Some episodes centering only on angel fights could possibly shortened or even, dare I say it, put in an action montage. Awkward silences and scenes could be removed. (If you’ve seen the later episodes in the series, you know what I mean.) Flashbacks would be more or less pointless, and mind examination sequences could be shortened. Certain key-plot points could be revealed at slightly different times if it’s in the interest of saving time. And concerning the ending, there is no way the director would try to end with the original versions of episodes 25 and 26; The End of Evangelion will be used. This is all assuming that the entire storyline is going to be in the movie, which isn’t really clear yet. However, it doesn’t make sense to not do the entire story, as there’s no real ending until that point; each angel is just part of a series, so cutting it off after an angel’s death wouldn’t be logical, and even ending after the seventeenth angel’s death would not be satisfying, for a movie like Evangelion would need some gigantic ending to succeed.

Quote:
Greg Broadmore’s illustration of an Angel concept, playing with the idea of an EVA becoming a twisted version of its former self.

Um…do we really need new angel concepts? I mean, picture #23 looks completely sweet, but aren’t the angel’s designs established already, each corresponding to the angel’s true nature? I’d be concerned if they redid all the angel designs so that they looked more like Evas, since the only ones that closely resemble Evas are numbers 1 and 3. Still, it’s amazing concept art, keeping in line with the series, but bringing some new ideas to the table. However, I will cry if Rei does not have blue hair in the movie…

Now, it's been a *very* long time since I've watched the Eva movies, so please correct me if I'm mistaken. I seem to recall that Death & Rebirth's first half is nothing but review, and End of Evangelion's first not-quite-half-but-close is just another review. Even if they really spent an hour on setting up the scenario, in a 3 hour movie, that would leave 2 hours to have all the D&R/EoE adaptation fun you wanted. That seems like the most logical course of action to me (assuming my info is correct). Then, if it turns out that this is super-successful, they could go back and do a prequel, more fully laying out what happened in Eps 1-24. Prequels are all the rage these days.... Wink

Geh! Why? I would cry if they did give her blue hair. It would look ridiculous, be completely distracting and detract from the story. (Utena musical, anyone?) It works in the anime because you don't think about it. I don't think it will cross over to live-action very successfullly.

Well, if it weren't an extreme shade of blue, it could be all right. With red eyes, it might attain that certain "level of creepiness" they want. Of course, red eyes alone might accomplish that... Shocked

If they did anything with her hair, I'd rather they just made it stark white, or something a bit more "natural-looking" like that in order to play up her whole "albino" angle. If not that, then the black hair looks fine, in my opinion. Concept art suggests that was going to be Rei's hair colour initially in the anime anyway.

Yeah, but Rei isn't like the other characters who all have regular hair. spoiler[She's special because she's almost an angel, and at least some shade of blue would make her stand out more. At least, I think that's why she has blue hair.]

Regardless, sky blue hair tends to look silly in real life. It doesn't look unnatural in a "supernatural" sort of way like Rei'd need, it looks unnatural in an "artificial poser stupid wannabe rave girl" sort of way. Something more stark white or black with just creepy eyes would make the character stand out fine while still giving her some sense of dramatic legitimacy.

Not really. You can't explain away Misato's purple hair that way. It's just a characteristic of anime to have strangely colored hair. Perhaps they could give her a halo Wink

Nagi is right. Blue and other strange hair colors just do not work well in real life. I mean.. just look at this:

They could pull it off if they used this though:

or maybe this...

Laughing

I don't necessarily care what color her hair is, as long as she still has the red eyes.

Kazuki-san, those pictures are hilarious.

I think the blue hair could work fine if she were albino with red eyes and the hair had frosted white highlights... she wouldn't look human, she'd look like she was grown in a vat, which seems appropriate to me.

I think Rei would look fine with white hair (it worked for storm in X-men).

I just hope this whole thing doesn't turn out to be another Starship Troopers treatment. I put the NERV parking permit sticker on my car, so I will go see the movie regardless if it's made.

Starship Troopers was the bomb, in large part because it had the good sense to play Heinlien's delusional jingoism for laughs.
I dunno what about Eva filmmakers could subject to similar spoofing, unless they wanted to mock the whole Jung-by-way-of-Godard aspect of the show, which is probably less ripe for mainstream spoofing.

Not to get off topic, but don't get me wrong; I thuroughly enjoyed Starship Troopers. I watched the first half of Death & Rebirth last night. I suppose a similar treatment could work for a live action film.

BWAH HAHAH. just had a thought with Starship Troopers (which ruled). What If Paul Verhoven directed? We could look forward to seeing wacky "join Nerv" mock ad commecials! And he can do blatent fan service to the point where its almost tasteless, just like in Eva! And the End of Evangelion kinda reminded me of the end of Total Recall anyway.

I just got back from Hitchhiker's Guide, and that movie is exactly the kind of thing an Eva adaptation needs to be; distill everything that's good and distinctive about the series, trim the fat, put in new but consistent elements to keep established fans off-balance, and make the effects expressive rather than flashy.

PJ's next project after Kong will be The Lovely Bones.

EDIT: Oops, I responded to a first page post thinking it was a fourth page post. Well, that's true anyway, so I'm not taking it down.
