If you talking about VHS days then you should look at DBZ.Its look exactly how it is now on DVD Shocked

Yes, I'm talking about VHS, but I guess I can't expect the new fans to remember how much worse those were handled than todays releases, even if it was only as recent as 2001...

As for DBZ having the same count on both VHS and DVD, it's because DVDs started while the VHS tapes were still coming out. Rather than starting from 1 all over again, they just picked up with the most recent VHS tapes. As for having few episodes, that was a blunder on their part price wise. The VHS tapes only had 2-3 episodes, each, but they also sold for only $20 so you really got what you payed for. The mistake was that the DVDs still maintained a high price but mirrored the VHS tapes which made them look bad.

OK, this is getting way off topic...

I'm guessing FUNI has this. At least I hope. This is driving me crazy. I want to know. Anyway, I think FUNI could really do a good job with this.

The last time I checked FUNI had put 5 titles on TV (DB, DBZ, DBGT, Blue Gender and Detective C) w/ a 6th (Fullmetal Alchemist) coming in November.

Edit, oh yeah and "yu yu hakusho."

yeah, ur right... and then funi does have other shows that aren't on tv:

fruits basket, kiddy grade, the lupin the 3rd movies, tenchi gxp

so they could go either way with a tv release... we'll just have to wait and see i guess...

I haven’t seen Gantz, but after what I have read here, I will probably just buy it on DVD even if it’s on TV. If it was edited on Japanese TV it will be destroyed over here.

I also agree w/ your other point, I don’t think FUNI is just about TV, they need both shows on TV and DVD only because if they pushed all their shows on TV they ultimately would lose a lot of DVD customers. I personally like Detective Conan a lot but I will never buy an episode that was on TV, so basically by showing it on TV they have lost me as a DVD customer. This is why they are releasing episodes from season 3 on DVD when the release the first few DC episodes. They know TV showings hurt DVD sales but at the same time every they flash the “Funimation” logo at the end of Detective C someone new to anime goes to their site and starts exploring their releases. So I think it's wise to have both TV and non-TV shows, it gets the company exposure without overexposing every show. So IMO GANTZ will probably not be on TV. You might have noticed that FUNI normally puts longer series on TV because less people are going to buy a 200 episode anime, if I had to guess I would say that their strategy is make money off of cartoon network w/ long term shows and make money off of DVDs that people can afford (4-8 disk sets).

That is if FUNI gets the license, of course.

Even if he didn't say it, there's a very simple logic to it:

1. Shows that air on TV sell better than shows that do not. (More people see the show, ergo more people can become interested in it. Etc etc etc.)
2. Therefore, if the TV rights are available, and the capital is available to purchase those TV rights, attempts will be made to buy those rights.
3. TV broadcast rights are only useful if they are actually used.
4. Therefore, any show to which the TV rights are purchased, will be offered to various TV stations for air.

Of course, one objection is that an overwhelming majority of anime licensed in the States will never air on TV.. but the POTENTIAL is significant enough that companies will still make the investment.. and (as shown by MTV2, the Anime Network, Viz's job-posting, etc) new broadcasters are popping up all the time.. which means that even Hikaru no Go might find a broadcast niche if a new "Board Games" channel starts up and needs shows.

TV broadcasts offer other forms of promotion, too. Credits on a show aren't JUST for self-gratification. :p

I never really understood much of Gantz but it seemed ok. But i'm still not sure Funimation will be able to picks it up becuase while ADV has so many titles they do have the experinece but FUNimation still has potential since they're still relitivly little.

actually forget that question, but i still have somthing to point out. When people attempt somthing that dosent mean the attempt is going to work.

Well of course. The difference is FUNimation is determined to air EVERY property they pick up. As opposed to say, Geneon, or Bandai, whose motive seems to be to license anything that looks interesting, and if there's a gem in the bunch, push for that one to air on TV, meanwhile put the rest on DVD, and maybe a network will notice and want one.

My guess is that ADV either already has or will take this title. When I first saw it, it seemed like the kind of title (a more mature psychological type of anime) they've been trying to acquire to balance out their Anime Network schedule.

Funimation has some of the oddest pricing on the market. Sometimes the price per episode of their titles is the LOWEST of any anime series (check out things like Dragonball, Fruits Basket and the upcoming Case Closed), othertimes they'll only stick three episodes on a DVD and charge a $29.95 SRP.

I'd prefer to see Funimation get this myself, but they've played the domain name game before (One Piece, Prince of Tennis) and ADV seems to be in better position for this. We'll probably know by Otakon...
