Following on, what's the etymology of "-tan"?

It's the way a kid would pronounce the suffix '-san', so its use sort of suggests endearment in itself.

Right now, there's a very popular "franchise" in Japan called Moetan. What it is is a series of pamphlets and study guides that help college students learn English phrases and vocabulary... through the help of a cute little girl (hence the har har name Moetan)

http://www.moetan.jp/

You can see sample pages here:
http://www.moetan.jp/moetan.html

With the way the word is used, you can say that the girl is moe, and that you are also moe for the girl.

I was going to ask if Moe-tan was related to this.

Some of the Moe-tan books are hilarious. They touch upon so many stereotypes it's incredulously silly.

I thought it was just a cuter way to say chan? atleast thats what the translation notes in Tsubasa vol 2 say. hence why the Operating system Girls are called "OS-tan"

Never mind the cute little girls--I like the blushing duck on the Moetan site.

Perhaps guys feel about these cute little girls the way girls feel about cute cuddly animals?

(Alter ego: Yeah, and pigs floss.) Wink

I totally love moe characters. The bishoujo/moe animes are usually among my favorites, just to name some examples:

DC Da Capo
Azumanga Daio (Chiyo chan is so moe!!)
Ai Yori Aoshi (Aoi is so cute Embarassed )
Kimi ga Nozumo Eien (One of the best anime ever)
Love Hina (Manga is better than the anime)
Digi Charat
Chobits

And the list goes on...

In my book a good anime needs a cute girl at least. Watch huge ugly guys or super robots beating each other is not my style...

Woah. Hold on there. Di Gi Charat? No way. Not even Puchiko is innocent. Remember, moe=cute AND innocent.

However, you were right with your last listing. Chii is practically the poster child for moe (at least in the US. Darn you, CLAMP) soon to possibly be outdone by Ren and Miu of DearS.

However, if you want moe without your mind turning into Rice-a-Roni, try Kono Mini. Heck, ANN posted notice about this many moons ago and I immediately wanted it and I didn't even know what the series was.

Now that I've actually watched it, I can guarantee it won't turn your brain to Rice-a-Roni or Uncle Ben's. Why? Because it's GAINAX.

I've seen worse.

Like on some JP real doll site someone posted to 4chan. the english site was tame then I stumbled into the "for only sale in japan side" the lolicom love doll was alot worse than that doll.
I guess its just context since that one isnt ment for sex were as the one I saw was.

Kinda like why I like Moe but dont like lolicom.

I always thought Sakura and Tomoyo of CCS hold that position. Chii seems to be a tad too dependant on service shots, even though they are supposedly inspired by her naivity Wink

Ah, artwork by Jug, from the pages of Dengeki Moeoh, the moe offshoot from the regular Dengeki Daioh.

With titles like Azumanga Daioh, GunslingerGirl, Hoihoi-san, Indian Summer (forgot original title), Starship Operators and Ichigo Mashimaro, Mediaworks just has to be the most moe publisher out there. Then again, I feel Yotsuba! is far too goofy to be included in the list Very Happy

Hrmm. Moe is not so much a genre than it is a title bestowed upon characters by fans. So this estimate, and how it's being framed, is rather questionable...
